(and no one posts pictures of the size of the brush to use, or what RGB values constitute an area that is too bright and needs to be darkened and vice versa)

No pictures, but a video ;)

At lynda.com, there's a series of Videos by Chris Orwig.
You can watch the first few as a trial. In the "Enhancing the tone of the lips" and "Adding dimension to the face" he uses (a variation of) this technique.
He uses Soft Light instead of Overlay. Less strong effect, same basics. Also, he sometimes paints with color instead of B/W.

The Chris Orwig retouching lynda.com stuff is worth the price of admission. I got a ton out of them especially the fashion one Rene linked above.

Thanks again, and apologies for hijacking the thread Dwight :-)

As so often happens here at POTN, my simple question has lead to a whole garden of delights ... I'm watching the Lynda tutorlals, which fit in nicely with the Monday Night Lights (external link) I've been watching (subscription fee, $5 a session, Monday nights) from LIGHT Photographic Workshops online seminars and I also have a subscription to the Kelby Training although I haven't used it yet as I am just getting my focus. All of this is excellent as I am working very hard to migrate myself from Corel's PhotoImpact that I have used for about ten years over to Photoshop as I add portraits and glamor to my business regime. So, I need to thank you guys ... hijack my threads anytime! :-)
