Metz 76 MZ 5

I'm thinking of buying the Metz 76 MZ 5.
Has anybody used/owned one?
If so your thoughts are Good or Not so good?
Would appreciate any help and advice.

Metz flashes are often the 'old reliable' of the pro world in speedlites, for a flash which was not limited to usage with a single brand of camera (as is true of ETTL, iTTL, dTTL, etc.) but could be switched from brand to brand via modules which provided flash dedication logic. The Metz module for the Canon dSLR is the 3102, for example. I have three Metz flashes, and they work with my Olympus (TTL), Bronica (TTL), and Canon (ETTL), and if I should ever switch to Nikon, they could all work with that brand. Metz 76 is a very powerful flash, and it has the dependability of exposure (unlike the ETTL/iTTL/dTTL of the digital SLR) of the photosensor controlled Auto mode as well as the inherent (somewhat unpredictable) dSLR xTTL mode.

I work with 2 Metz 60CT-4 flashes, and am in the process of putting together an older CT-1.
I've had it laying around in parts, and just fired it up the other day .. woo hoo!

I needz a new sync cord and power cord, but other then that, she's ready to go!

You'll never regret the 76 MZ .. that thing is a monster!

Your Metz 60CT is still more powerful!

I have had my 76MZ for a few years. Used it on my 20D, now on my 5D. When you purchase it, if you have the extra money, buy an extra battery or two. I used, and still have, the Metz 60CT-4, which I love, and used on my Bronica ETRSi. It works great on my Canon. As stated before, you can't go wrong with the Metz.

With the SCA 3102 can you use High Speed Sync?

The 3102 does support HSS, but the flash itself must support that feature in order for the mode to operate.

yes, Metz is sometimes a little slow on getting back to you, but, they do. be patient. Once they get back to you, they keep following up to ensure that you get the answer you are looking for.

yes, as Wilt stated, the 3102 does support high speed sync.

Metz chart that I have is older than the 76 MZ model, only the 70 MZ is listed and it does NOT support HSS. I found this quote on another forum,

Anyone using this flash can tell me how to set HSS, I am also using the SCA 3402 M6 adapter. I want to use AP mode with wide aperture at shutter speed 1/500s and faster.

The manual not very clear, never show you how it is set but the specifications section mentioned HSS.

Sorry, 76 MZ-5 does not have HSS (I had to get the 580). The next model in the Metz lineup with HSS is 58, 54, 45 and some lower models.

and it seems to support what my chart showed, that the 7x MZ series does not have HSS support. The Bogen Imaging web site is uninformative about HSS unfortunately.

I just found the specs on the 76MZ and it is 'more powerful' than the 45CT by only the slimmest of margins. The 45CT has a AOV coverage for a 35mm FL (135 format) of GN45, while the 76MZ has a GN46 <whoopie> at that same zoom head setting.

Wilt, compare this to Quantum T5D-R, is it better?

I was never totally happy with 550 & 580 speedlites but the 76 MZ-5 give consistently excellent results, for me, the only drawback is it's bulk

Neil,,I've been a fan of Metz flashes since my introduction to the old lead acid battery powered Metz 402 in the late 1970's.. I still have a 45CT1 and sold my 60CT1 to help finance the purchase of a Bronica ETRs many years ago..

I found Metz flashes tough as teak and ultra reliable..

I seriously tried with the speedlites, but often ended up sticking on my old Metz CL 45 as I knew what I was doing with it.

I recently bought the Metz 76 MZ 5 and it really is excellent. I feel I have much more control of the light than I ever had with the Canon units. These pics were taken last night much to Mrs R's annoyance as I wanted to show the OP how natural the colour is and how by using the manual settings you can really get a good balance between the natural ambient light and the flash.
