I recently purchased a T1i/500 and with all my previous P&S canon cameras I was able to just take the memory out of the camera and do a direct download to my computer. With the T1i this doesn't seem possible...any suggestions? or is this just one of the things I have to accept? Thank you

You mean your computer as an SD slot? I hook my camera up via the USB cable...

There's no reason you can't. Why do you think it isn't possible?

It should work in exactly the same way unless some software was involved that can't read the new RAW files and needs updating.

I have a T1i and I take the SD card out of the camera and insert it into the SD slot of my laptop and transfer the photos/videos as you would expect.

What's the issue?

hmmm...mine doesn't work that way. I have to use the camera and force the DL...I was expecting to do what you indicated, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe a bad SD slot, but the compact flash slot worked great...oh I never did format the card so maybe that has something to do with it. Kind of puzzling ...

SDHC cards are not compatible with older SD readers and most of the older SD slots in computers. What you need is an SDHC card reader that plugs into a USB port. Check with your local electronic store or amazon.com

Here is a starting point with amazon:

I use the SanDisk Micromate which is shaped different and may not fit in some front USB slots. A short USB extension cord is a very useful accessory.

I'm willing to bet that's the exact problem. If the SD card reader is an older one, it won't read SDHC cards.

Yep. The built-in card readers on my older computers will not recognize my 8GB SD cards from my P&S, so I have to use the USB cable.

I agree with the USB extension cord.
