I have a few Amvona light stands of different shapes and sizes (picked up at a yard sale), a 580EX I, a 430EX II, and a ST-E2.

It occurs to me that I can make a small studio setup with the addition of a couple umbrellas.

But - the tops of the light stands don't have the hardware necessary to mount a flash and an umbrella.

What do I need, and where should I get it?

Thanks!

Think this'll be ok? Now I just need an umbrella or 2...

Also, what's the right umbrella size? 32"? 40? What are the pros and cons of the sizes?

For general purposes, I think 40" to 46" is Ok for head shot and normal portrait..
But if you can get the 60" the better to cover most areas, depends on what you want to do.

See this link for Impact umbrellas:

Or this for all umbrellas:

For my little strobes (580EX, 430EX), would it be better to go with silver vs. white in order to maximize the light?

Silver would be used to shoot into the umbrella and reflect light onto your subjects, white is used to shoot through the umbrella onto your subjects.

You guys are so patient.. thanks, I figured that. What I don't know is the relative light loss... I was thinking that the silver reflecting would be brighter. Is that true? If so, how much brighter? A stop? What are the pros and cons of each way?
