I was working on my 40D today, and decided to try to take a Bird shot at 3200. Now, i did a little post processing on the image in Photoshop, namely to place a new copyright logo in the image but that's about all.

i should add that the lighting was all natural outdoor light.
Please comment on the noise level of the image.

Wow, I'm jealous, my camera at 1000 iso looks super grainy, I have to noise ninja any picture. This is awesome! Did you do any noise reduction at all?

I think it is a point well taken on the usability of high iso shots with the 40d [In at least similar circumstances]. I do, however, notice a kind of banding artifacting--horizontal lines--appearing on the upper right portion. I imagine that these are even more noticeable if one were to print this at anything larger than 4x6. That said, I'll bet it could be cleaned up to print much larger. For web? it looks just fine, in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply. I did not use any noise reduction software of any kind.
Is Noise Ninja available for a free 30 day trial? I might try it.
I'm also working with my 20D to see if I can get similar results from it, this is where Noise Ninja may come in handy.

Thanks for your reply and feedback. After reading your reply I did notice that in fact there is a banding effect on the upper right hand side of the image.
When I blew the image up to 200% in DPP it was downright distracting, but when viewed at 100% it was somewhat less apparent.
For this reason I may invest in an application like Noise Ninja. Although, high ISO noise reduction is turned off in the camera. This I'll rectify tomorrow and i'll submit another image, so please have a look and C&C that one also.

I must say adding noise ninja to Photoshop CS4 makes quite a difference in the print ability of this photo at 8"x10" which is the largest print I can produce on my Epson 340.
It's really remarkable how Noise ninja works removing the red noise that caused most of the banding and color shift especially on the Goldfinch, the twig and the wrought iron rail.
You can bet I'm going to buy Noise ninja, and at least on the 40D, just use the default settings.
Thanks again to everyone for your input.
