Last week, I asked about which lens to use for an indoor karate demo in a poorly lit gym. The 85mm seemed to be what everyone said and it was a good choice-

you wouldn't have in that arena though. Just checked his EXIF. 1/40, F4, ISO 1600. Tough place to shoot. I don't think a zoom is going to help him there.

+1, like I said, I've shot in alot of dim gyms, and I'll say that 70% of them 2.8 isn't going to cut it, unless you under expose and do alot of noise reduction in post. Dim gyms = fast primes. Light rules in those situations.

That location is Arena Sports in Redmond, WA isn't it? If so, I've tried shooting in there with a 40D and the 85 1.8. You'll definitely need to push it to ISO 1600 or even H (3200) in order to get decent shots. The lighting in there is really horrible. The trouble with the 85 1.8 for soccer however is the rather limiting range. It wouldn't be as much of an issue if you could get good field position but with the crappy plexi-glass shielding, nets and other items in the way preventing you from doing so, you're pretty seriously limited. :(
