How to: Replace broken 580ex flash tube

gonna be doing this next week to one of my flashes... how much does a flash tube for 550ex cost? gonna call canon tomorrow! Thanks!

I'm wondering if there's a part-list/service manual for the 5d that will be able to show me a breakdown of the camera and part numbers. Hmmmmmmm?

Just gotta dig through the internet for a service manual, or buy one. Check the service manual database:

I was using one of my 580EX flashguns today (remotely off-camera) and triggering it with my ST-E2.

I half knew that balancing the flashgun (in plastic foot stand) on its side and on top of a plant pot ... that was on a shelf on a stage back wall ... was not at all sensible. Add to that lots of children jumping about and with balloons ... and well - I was asking for it, wasn't I ? !!

Taking a mini break for drink n food at this party, I returned to find flash gun and stand on the floor

Luckily the (slide rail) plastic foot mount on the flash had NOT broken - just the plastic around it that was part of the plastic stand! However ... when I shut semi-open battery door and switched back on ... there was a clicking sound from the zoom head

Back at the house this evening I figured out that the flash was still able to fire, so hopefully will all work fine, should I get the zoom head re-seated properly.

A quick Google, found this thread and your pictures of disassembly of 580 EX.

Having taken all 10 screws out and slide off half the plastic cover, the 2x front plastic lenses / covers fell off and exposed top of zoom head (that was wonky). I simply pushed it straight and then kept pushing it down evenly until it was fully reseated into 105mm (inner most) position.

Zoom mechanism now works when manually changing the mm lengths

Thankyou once again. If you do not hear from me further on this thread, assume that all the functions and features still work OK with it in slave mode once again.

AWESOME!!! I fixxed my 580.. It jumped track and got it realigned! Thank You !!!Thank You!!! Thank you!!!...... Did I say Thank You? LOL Save me some big bucks - I actually drove to the canon service center (30miles) and it was closed on a Saturday... I was bummed, but I guess it was meant to be.... Yeah....

Note: I was so excited to find out how to take it apart, I forgot to take out the batteries! I touched by the motor area - some transistor and got a shock of my life! The unit was off.... I guess I was Off... LOL....

do you know or think the 430EX II has a similar if not identical setup to the 580EX?

Mine may be in need of repair because it no longer fires a flash even though the pilot light is on and the green flash fire light flashes after a shot but there's no flash. I just opened the bottom half but could not figure out the remainder so this will be very helpful.

I have done the SAME thing. Fortunately, all I broke was the hot shoe itself, and that was also an easy fix. I've also forgotton to secure the flash to the light stand and watched it fall and hit the driveway pavement. The zoom head would just click and not work, but it still flashed, I took it apart and fixed it but got zapped just like you did... haha. Wow that smarts!

Nice tutorial... I'm sure I'll need it at some point.

hmm, how did you fix the zoom problem? i guess i have the same exact problem on my Opteka flash, but not all times though.

my yn460ii's hotshoe foot also broke into pieces - i bought myself a replacement instead. how did you fix yours? it was impossible for me to glue back tiny bits of those plastics..

Thank you, also. With your detailed explanation and photos I was able to open up the head of my 550EX flash, and repair the spring which holds the wide angle panel in place.

Awesome tutorial! Just replaced the foot and lamp unit on a broken 580 I picked up on Craigslist. The part #s and prices are still bang on, took about 5 minutes on the phone with Canon and 45 minutes to fix the flash.

Just curious, wouldn't pressing the discharge button on the flash remove whatever charge is left in the capacitor?

If the tube is broken, the flash won't actually fire. So you can't discharge the cap that way. I know this because I ended up discharging it mostly with my hand. On accident. Then I used a junk USB cable to finish it off. Made a real nice spark.
