Help using my flashgun

Just got a 580EXII today and want to know how you use it to do a outdoor portrait pic and make the background look like it's nightime. Hope that makes sense and people know what I mean!

Find the correct exposure for the shot. Set it in manual & then dial it down about 5-6 stops. If that gives the background look that you want, then add the strobe & move it closer & closer until the "fill" is about right.

Manual mode on the camera, E-TTL mode on the flash.
Set your shutter speed at 1/200 (the fastest shutter speed you can use without resorting to high speed sync).
Set your ISO at 100 and adjust the aperture for proper background exposure. Now close the aperture at least three stops from there. Example: You meter the background at f/8, then stop down to f/22.
Half-press the shutter button to activate the distance scale on the 580EX II. Note the maximum distance and stay within that range.
Shoot, chimp and adjust FEC as needed for the look you want.

Note: Max distance with the 580EX II zoomed to 105mm at f/22 is about 9 feet. You can use high speed sync with a faster shutter speed and a wider aperture, but your range will only be half as much.

What? You should be able to set it up in less than 5 minutes the first time? Less than a minute the 2nd time.

Sorry guys couldn't sus it out, probably a dumb question but what's FEC?

FEC= Flash Expouser Compinsation. what the other POTN'ers were telling you is quite simple did you read your manual? After you do that you will know how to navigate around then follow there direction

Flash is never simple.
Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC) is how you adjust the flash exposure in E-TTL mode.

Yeah cheers for that, I need to download one as I got it 2nd hand from Jacons digital without one!

Anyone know where to get one?
