I just purchased my first Mac and I am wondering which photo editing software is best.

Aperture is designed to be a photo library, while Photoshop is pixel-level editing. If you need to work with layers, Photoshop is the way to go. If you need more basic editing functionality, Aperture or Lightroom are good choices.

Serious users will generally have either Lightroom or Aperture in conjunction with Photoshop. They'll do their cataloging and the bulk of their post-processing within Aperture or Lightroom and then send the heavy lifting stuff out to Photoshop.
