Has anyone experienced the front ring that hold the hood fall/seperate from the barrell? This happened to me today and I am really bummed! I expected more from and $1.2K lens... It started off binding while rotating my focal ring and it eventually separated.. ARHHHHH... :o.... How much would it cost to be repaired? I hear this is a common problem... or is it not? There are 3 retaining pins exposed, but seem too low to keep the ring on.... should I just "super glue" it back? Any input would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks Photo buffs..:)

Super glue?
I don't know, I think a better idea would be to call canon first

If you post a photo someone may be able to provide a bit more help based on what they see...

I believe the pins under the phillips screws are responsible for holding the hood mount on. But it appears to sit lower than normal.

Before this unfortunate mishap occurred, did you experience any difficulties placing the designated hood on your lens? Not pointing fingers at anyone, was the hood applied properly? Some of the Canon lens hoods are a little tricky with placement. Otherwise, you may have a defective lens that would certainly warrant a return to Canon for a proper fix and/or exchange.

I hear this is a common problem... or is it not?

I've heard that it is pretty common as well. I've also heard that Canon will fix it at no charge, regardless of the warranty status. I would probably call Canon and talk to someone there before attempting to fix it yourself.

I am very delicate with my lenses. I just noticed it 1st had binding while rotating my focal rings and eventually that piece separated. This all occured within 2-3 days.

Smart move. Hopefully, Canon will provide a quick fix for your lens and eat the cost...
