Help refresh my memory pleasae.

Hello all,
I just re-bought the Genesis 200 kit by Calumet. It's been about a year since I have even thought about studio photography, but I got a wild hair and decided to do it again. That said, I can't even begin to remember how to set up my camera. (40d) I believe there's a sync speed issue, 1/250th right? I don't know.
Anyways, any help would be great. I'm getting shots but there is black on the bottom of the shot. I believe that is something to do with the shutter speed. I'm babbling now so I'll turn to my POTN friends for help.

Try using a slower shutter speed, that black band is likely part of your shutter.

40d max shutter sync speed it 1/250 which is causing the black band.

I feel like I have forgotten everything I knew before. It's slightly frustrating to say the least.

That max sync speed is the speed it will safely sync with a Speedlight but the sync speed you can achieve with a cable or radio trigger and a monolight is usually going to be lower. Unless you're shooting outdoors where you need to control ambient light then don't worry about max sync speed. Set your camera to a safe and generic 1/125s and you'll have no trouble syncing and you won't get any trace of shutter curtain.

excellent! Thanks that's what I suspected was happening. Now if I could only remember how to set my white balance I'd be set.

yeap, Canon goes into a lot of detail about its speedlights and cameras; but the information about using "other people's flashes" is just a very short paragraph at the end of the flash chapter in the camera manual... "with large studio flash, the synch speed is 1/125 sec. or slower."
