My 40D has been acting weird lately. The picture counter on the top plate has been stuck on 999 for a dozen or so shots and then it will start counting pics correctly.I shoot RAW and I've tried 3 different card all doing the same thing.I've reformatted all the cards and it really hasen't been a problem other than the counter.Any thought or suggestions?

Until it calculates that you have less space than required for 1000 photos it will show 999.

If you shoot RAW, the problem goes away. Because RAW files are bigger, my cards get nowhere near 999 before they are full, and thats with a 30D.

Get a smaller card? ;)

As said, it's normal when the camera calculates that you have room on the card for 1000 shots or more.

Thanks for the info!! what's weird is that it's never done this before and I owned the camera with the same cards for about 9 months.

What size card are you using that holds over 999 RAW images on a 40D?

My 50D does the same thing (if I switch to JPG - an empty 8 GB card indicates room for 371 RAW images). It will stay at 999 until you get below that, then decrement properly from there.

I'm only using a 4 mg card so it doesn't even hold that many RAW pictures. Here again another weird situation.

do you mean a 4GB card? A 4 meg card would not even hold 1 RAW image ;)

That is weird... Are you sure you have it set to RAW? How many images did you used to be able to get out of it?

Yeah I meant 4GB card.It seems like after I shoot about 12 to 20 pictures with 999 on the counter finally counts the real amount of pictures.Yes its set on RAW not sRAW or jpeg.
