I was wondering if anyone has experience with NFL training camp - specifically the Philadelphia Eagles training camp - and bringing a long telephoto lens.

I was considering the "bigma" 50-500 or perhaps a canon telephoto, but I'm worried that I may get kicked out for having such a large lens. I have been there before and had no trouble with the 70-200, but I didn't notice anyone sporting anything larger than 300mm at the time. Is there a size limit to camera/lenses if you are not with the press?

I've never gone to an NFL training camp as a fan (nor gone to the Eagles' camp), but as credentialed media, every year I see a lot of fans with all kinds of white lenses, sitting in the stands, and standing at various "cut-outs" between the stands.

Regardless of what I (or anyone else on this or any other board) tell you, though, the only ones whose opinions matter are the folks at the gates to camp and the security people on/near the fields.

I seriously doubt that you're gonna get tossed out for camera gear, but the only way to know for sure is to go here: http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/fanzone/contactus.asp (external link) and submit your question to the team.

Well I have gone to the Green Bay Packers training camp as a fan and as credentialed media. At Packers camps in years past its open (there are no gates or whatnot) and fans just gather along the sidewalk and sit on bleachers. This year I hear its going to be different.

Anyway, as a fan.. not really knowing how the Eagles hold their camps.. I never have had a problem bringing the 100-400 or the 300 2.8. Although, I never used tripod or monopod - I never had a problem. The 300 2.8 gets heavy though.

But yeah the only ones who will have discression will be the people at the gate if there is one.. and they have the final say.

I agree it's who's on the gate. Been to the Linc and Citizens with my gear. Also the Yankee's. Haven't been stopped. The captures are for my private collection.

I been thinking of going to Lehigh some morning to see the Bird's train.

Shot redskins camp today with my 70-200 and my 75-300. I really really REALLY wanted more reach. However even with my limited reach I had a blast. I plan on having a bigger lens if I head out to training camp again next year.

Did you have any issues getting getting a 400 into the park?

These are great, I have to check about the Patriots training camp and see if I can get in there with my father's 100-400 and play around. Did you use a tripod/monopod?

I was planning on going to Bears camp last Friday, it was storming and I was not sure I could get in with my 300 2:8 and was not going to go back to my truck and have someone see me putting it away then maybe loosing it. I sent an email to Bears and they sent me the usual stuff...long lenses not allowed but my friend said he saw guys without creds using them. I might take the trip this week and if they dont let me in I will just head home. Would love to get some close shots.
