I have the 35L, 85L and 135L, but if I could only have three lenses with a full frame camera, it would be the 16-35/2.8 L, 24-70/2.8 L and 70-200/2.8 L. Those are my bread and butter! The rest are seasoning. :)

16-35, 24L and 100-400.

My typical landscape bag is the 16-35mm, 24-105 and 100-400 and my low light around the house lens is the 24L. So if I could have only 3 I'd swap out the mid range zoom for my favorite fast prime. But yeah, 16-35 and 100-400 (with TCs and macro tubes) covers a hell of a lot of bases. :D

My decision would be based upon wants, needs, and shoulder health issues. I am unable to handhold very heavy lenses at any focal length. I have good success with these:

17-40 L
24-105 IS L
70-200 IS L

I know they are all f/4, but what can you do?

What I have already:

16-35II
24-105
70-200 2.8 IS

These cover me for about 90% of what I want. I'd like to add a fast prime(already have the 50 1.8) to augment the three.. looking at maybe the 85L or 85 1.8 or maybe get the 50L.

If I were told to get rid of my lenses, except for three, I'd keep ...

17-40 L (would prefer the 16-35 L), 24-70 L and the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS

Of course, I'd have my 100-400 L IS hidden in the closet and swear I'd already gotten rid of it ... "HONEST! I really did! I kid you not!"

I have a 16-35 II, 24-105 and 70-200 2.8 IS with mine. This covers me for just about everything. I am thinking about adding a fast prime into the mix as well... maybe an 85L or or a 135...

For now, I'm pretty content.

+1 With this setup I only think of the pictures I want, not the lens I don't own.....
