I've been using my XSi since it came out & I'm really looking for a body with more fps for football, baseball and other sports. I've read on numerous sites that this camera has significant noise issues. I'm a DC-area resident and will use heavily with night photography. Should I expect noise performance worse than my XSi at ISO 100, 200 and exposures of 10"+? I rarely go beyond ISO 800 (where this camera seems to lack).

Also with the rumor of a possible 60D with increased noise reduction, I'm even more hesitant. 50D owners please let me know your experiences...Thanks.

The camera is good on noise, people just like to compare it to better cameras without comparing the price tag.

Its a great camera.

I agree. Especially if you rarely go past 800 ISO, you will love the 50D. To me, the noise issue has been way over blown.

I love mine. There will always be better camera, but I am very content with the 50D. Where is it that you read that this camera lacks beyond ISO 800? I shoot with 1600 all the time (and sometimes 3200), and it's great, especially with the updated firmware which addresses noise and banding issues. It'll blow your Xsi out of the water, in probably every way.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've read on other forums plus I've used the-digital-picture.com, dpreview.com, cameralabs.com, bobatkins.com and noise seems to be the major gripe with this body. Ironically when I talk to current owners and the staff at Penn Camera & Ritz, they all state the opposite. Any of you have any low light photos you've taken? I'm ready for another body but really really really want to make sure I'm investing wisely (especially since I just spend a ton of $$$ on glass). I'm not the one to buy new cameras b/c they have all the bells and whistles - I only want one that I can completely trust for all photo opportunities (night, low light, indoors, sports and everyday shooting). Thanks again.

Well you have to remember, most of the guys that do the reviews for these cameras also have done ones for the 5dMKII, 1dsmkIII and so on an so fourth.

The amount of noise that you can/can't tolerate is relative to what you are used to, I used to shoot film so I am more than happy with my 1DsMk2 even if it is not the latest and greatest. Hell even my 20D beat out print film I used to use.

So what you are saying is that people that actually USE the cameras as opposed to just TESTING the camera seem to like it a lot. I think that is a good sign.

Well all rumors are saying that there is a Canon press announcement on the 19th
Wait and see what is coming, if the 60D (or what ever replacement) shows up, will mean that the prices of 40 and 50D will drop lower not long after.

In my opinion:
I had a XSI and went to a 40D and loved it
Love the ergonomics, speed etc
Image quality wise I didnt get much difference, the 12 mp of the XSI was actually an advantage when cropping IMHO, I dont think it should be very diffferent from a XSI to a 50D either, more cropping power maybe?
The noise is not an issue until after 800 ISO, and that counts for the XSI, the 40D as well.
I used a 50D once and really liked it for what it counts, the screen was very nice
If i could switch my 40D for a 50D I would do it in a sec, , with the micro adjust the 15mp of cropping resolution and the nice screen, but I just dont need it right now ,it all comes down to money as i would have to put around 400$ on top my 40D.

But I think you will love your move from the XSI to a 50D (or xxD of your like) as I did mine to a 40D.
The 50D is a nicer camera, to me ;)
Let see what Canon has around the corner, I sincerely hope is not just a 50D with video

I have not always been a defender of the 50D but now that I have used it extensively, I find that it is a fantastic camera. I prefer it to my 40D (but I think I had a bad copy of the 40D (bad light metering) so it is not fair comparison). I also prefer it to my 20D that I loved.

I am rarely using it above 1600iso at which the noise is very easily manageable in PP.

I would recommend it without reservations.

The "noise issue" is because all the testers look at 100% crops, which is a ridiculous test. The testers should look at equivalent images sizes ( either prints or a common scaled down on screen image), because that is a reflection of reality. I haven't had the 50D long, but it is a very good camera and I like it a lot already. I will likely sell my 1dm2 after fall sports are over (it's my daughter's senior year), and keep the combo of 5d and 50d.

If you don't need the camera right away, wait to see what next week's announcements bring.
