Which Gitzo to buy?

I want to purchase a new Gitzo or used tripod for my husband but not sure which to buy. I want to keep the budget around 500 maybe a little more since I need to buy a ball head too. He's 6'3 and shoots mainly landscape/nature. Which one would be a good tripod?

Look into an XL version...the extended length (without center column extended) should be considered for him; maybe the standard non-XL would suffice.

What FL lens would be used on it? If over 300mm, go with the 3 series. The next choice is 4 section or 3 section legs...I hate 4 section because of the extra time to extend and retract three more sections during setup and takedown, but some love the shortness of the tripod for packing.

LOL sorry already married.....he'll use a variety of lenses but for the big boys a 500 or 600 haven't decided on which one yet. Right now a 300 & 400

I'd recommend a Gitzo 3541LS. However, it will run you more than $500 for a new one. It is closer to $700. But, it will last him a long time. It will also work well with the 500 or 600 in the future.

If you're gonna buy him a $700 tripod, let me ask you to marry me, again -- with much more emphasis and sincerity.

LOL afraid my hubby might have something to say about that one.
I ended up with the Gitzo 3541LS but got a good deal at 644.00 Now have to figure out the head to go on it.

I will address it that way among other things...........spoil​ed rotten is what he is. Thanks I'll look into the heads this is getting costly but it'll be a nice tripod hmmm wonder if I'll get one for Christmas

lbuy used and look on ebay; I got a studex something or other for $200 + shipping for both the legs AND the column. same tripod costs around $500 new for legs only.

a lot of older togs have been dumping their monster tripods onto the used market now that they've switched to digital and don't need the same support that was necessary for large format cameras.

I'm 6ft and went with the 3541XLS and have yet to extend the 4th section, but it is always there in case I ever need it and paid 724 shipped. Use it with the 500.

Hmm well if he decides he wants the XLS then we can always exchange it, hopefully this one will be good for him. Now to find a ballhead for it that isn't going to completely break me.. Was hoping to find a good used one at a good price but so far nothing.

I would suggest a Markins M20. It goes great with the 3541LS.
