I'm also looking for a more practical similar sized bag for day trips hiking etc. I like the LowePro Slingshot, but I'm left handed, so they are not 100% perfect.

I can highly recommend the Tamrac Adventure 7 backpack. It's comfortable, it's got a slim profile, and it's discreet (at least in the gray/black version). The top section is big enough for a sweatshirt, lunch, and a novel. The bottom section can fit an SLR with medium-sized lens (e.g. 17-55/2.8 IS), + two more lenses (or one more lens + flash or tabletop tripod).

Richard, I picked up the Domke and am very happy with it as a day bag around town. Thanks.

That's great news! I'm glad you enjoy the bag as much as I do!

Damn, I can't find any Canadian store that stocks this bag. Amazon.com won't even send it to me in Canada.

B&H will.

A great source for bags if you live in Eastern Canada is Henry's at www.henrys.com (external link). If they don't have it in stock, they will order it in for you... and watch out for some of their sales.

Sorry to bump this but wanted to add something. For those like me perusing this extremely useful thread to help choose a Domke bag NOTE that the F-5XZ is not precisely an F-5XC with the brown wax finish instead of the plain canvas, as it sounds here.

It is also missing the bottom opening into the compartment that the F-5XC has so if that's important to you then the F-5XZ is not going to be suitable! Minor for some, but important to me so I thought I'd add it to help others :)

It should also be mentioned it is smaller than the F-5XC. It is about 1" smaller in all internal dimensions. As a matter of fact the official internal depth is about 1/2" smaller than the height of an ungripped 5D Mk II, 7D, or some of the other larger Canon DSLRs. So while such cameras might fit, they aren't going to fit nearly as well as in the F-5XC which has an internal depth about 1/2" larger than the height of those same cameras.
