OK how about nearly pitch black, enough so I could barely if at all see the subject and focusing is impossible. Handheld, 85L F/1.2, long exposures. I used curves to expand the contrast but that is it in terms of processing.

I love impressionist art and I hit the mother lode with this particular combination.

#1 - path to my door
#2 - horse

#3 - walking path
#4 - forest and stars

This is complete darkness, #3 is under tree cover, no moon, I could only see the white markers which I used to frame the composition.

Very nice. What were the shutter speeds you used?

I remember speeds from 1/3 to 8 seconds or so. In some photographs not seen here there was more ambient light. These images are at the longer end and mostly between 2 and 5 second exposures.

Very sweet.

Take a look at this tut to get some of that chroma noise under control (if you don't already use a dedicated noise reduction program.)

Have you tried going down to ISO 12800? Just to try and get rid of the banding... Otherwise, pretty neat.

I don't see anything to get too excited about. If it was oil on canvas then a case could be made (arguably) that they could be worthwhile images. IMHO, as far as photography goes, not really what I would call keepers. I definitely wouldn't use it as an example to showcase the 5D2 capabilities nor those of the 85mm 1.2L.

Everyone looks at art differently, there is no right or wrong. The second shot of the horse really appeals to me. The effect is pretty cool.

I also found the horse shot held my interest the most. Cool!

If I was going to paint an oil I would have done that but I was out to see what I could get with everything balls to the wall wide open. In terms of the textures and banding I consider the images completely unique the way they are rendered and wouldn't change a thing.

That said I will consider the suggestions offered for the next round of "whatever happens". By the way this wasn't to be a complete critical or representative assessment of the equipment it was simply some output at extremes most folks will never execute, like shooting in complete darkness.

In terms of art I would consider the pixelation a form of pointillism.

Rey I would consider this a statement from someone who prefers literal interpretation. I like that too. For me impressionist art in photography during the early 20th century is some of the most moving imagery. I tire of literal interpretations unless the subject is absolutely riveting and that usually implies a non literal interpretation in a literal soup, meaning a unique way to express the subject using literal techniques.

Not at all. In fact my favorite painting is Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp, and I am a huge fan of Claude Monet. Usually when I see a thread in here, it is illustrating the technical prowess of a particular body, in your case the 5D2 at low light. My expectations were quite different when I initially clicked this thread. The effect you've shown could be achieved by much lesser cameras (at a much lower price point). I hope I didn't offend, and I'm all for trying new things and exploring diverse artistic outlets, but if I was looking for information about a 5D2, your images wouldn't motivate me to make that purchase. Perhaps the forum, Still Life, B/W & Experimental, would have been a more appropriate forum to showcase your artistic exploits. ;)
