Challenge #236 - Slow Sync Flash

The challenge for you this week is "Slow Sync Flash". I'd been toying around with this technique for a while without any great success; this is where you are coming to it.

The subject of the photo is up to you but it must be taken with flash, ambient light must also contribute to the exposure. You can use on board and/or one or more external flash/strobes. First or second curtain sync is up to you to show us your stunning pictures. ;)

A couple of links to help with the term 'slow sync':-

Happy flashing!

Results

Personally I think this should be a monthly challenge which will give everybody a bit more time to play and experimenting.
For I myself didn't have time or a chance to play. Nevertheless, thank you all who's entered.

goosfrabaa - Psycadelic Frog
Great capture of the all colour-wheel coloured peace frog. The green light(s?)
indicated the image was shot at really slow shutter speed. Great attempt!

Fergie - The 50th Shot ...
Please excuse me, but this shot really scared me - it forced me not to get up
to go to the loo for several nights. Nevertherest, I would love to find out
the story behind "the 50th shot".

Michael Wells - Night Rider
A very nice timing and composed picture. I could not faulted the techique at all.
Well done!

tmwag - Hammer Flash
Another awesome illustration of the techique of slow sync flash here. It ever
shown the great V-grip of the user sharply. Is he a golfer?

marie - slow sync flash on my blackberry tonight
I tried to see if there was an insect or something that alike around this well
exposed blackberry that supporting the slow sync motion. May be marie could fill us in?

Kevan_G9 - Neon Self
Kevan seemed to capture this image by hand-held? I am interested to hear
how and what was the rich colour background coming from. I think giving more time
Kevan would come up with his awesome cyclers' shots?

lanton - Tea Trailers
Please let us know how did you light up this glamourous tes set. I am not
ever want to guess.

tomy - Runnin' the Table
Wow! This picure speaks for itself... the great balance of the ambient and
external light, possibly triggered by the on camera flash? The motions of
the eight balls - grouse! Guess who is the next host?

Winners

1st - tomy - Runnin' the Table
2nd - Michael Wells- Night Rider
3rd - tmwag - Hammer Flash

Wow, what a surprise . . thanks for the win, Boutty! I was up against some serious competition. A salute to 2nd place Michael Wells ( love that "biker chick" image!) and to 3rd place tmwag for the great hammer hit. :D

Topics like this prompt us to get out the camera and try stuff that we never would have attempted otherwise. I was always afraid to try flash images of this type. Much is learned by participating in the challenges.

Anyway, I'll try to have the new topic up as soon as possible.

I would like to say, in my own defense...

Kevan seemed to capture this image by hand-held? I am interested to hear
how and what was the rich colour background coming from. I think giving more time Kevan would come up with his awesome cyclers' shots?

Michael Wells stole my idea!!!

I spent the better part of an hour hanging around my town's train station on a perfectly good Saturday evening, when I could have been wining and dining, but instead was waiting for trains to pull in while I would buzz by on my scooter for the killer shot. Not completely satisfied with my efforts, I returned home only to find another scooter had beat me to it. Yuh got some nerve there, buddy-boy.

About the cycling photos...we had 90+ degree weather this weekend and no matter how hard I tried, everyone (and mostly me) looked like absolute hell. There's already too much ugliness in the world to present such a photo here.

Boutty, this was a terrific challenge and I really appreciate you forcing us (or at least me) to try something brand new. I laughed out loud at Fergie's title, though I think I had him beat at about 350 photos (jpeg & raw combined).

So resigned that all my attempts had gone bust, I returned to the heart of my little town around 9p.m. last night and hung out front of a kid's candy and toy store to capture the bright neon lights hanging in the window as a last chance effort. About 50 hand-held shots swinging and swiveling the camera about, as people came and went from the neighboring pizzeria, each giving me a hard look, gave me this shot. Once back home, my daughter walked in during the PP work and she thought I might have damaged the family name in light of the location I had selected and the look on my face.

So to the winners, enjoy the fruit of your efforts. Congratulations, I'm happy for you. Me? I think I'm gonna have to leave town after this challenge.

I'm always a little reluctant to enter into the competitions but I love the results and images people produce. It really gets you thinking about photography and making the most out of your camera.

Congratulations to the winners, some brilliant photos, as I tried a few times this week it's not easy to use the slow sync function.

Excellent title and great fun trying it out (even if I didn't enter :p)

Here are two from yesterday I tried...

Congratulations to the winners and to Boutty for your inspired challenge and judging.
I liked all three but thought Tomy’s was great. I am still trying to figure out why there are three brown balls on the table.

My 50th shot was so called because it fell in in about that position although there were many many more shots than that. I liked this challenge mainly because it made me think hard about exposures and apertures. As a newcomer to having a camera with knobs and buttons on it also made me realise that I know absolutely next to nothing worth knowing on this subject.

I tried stationery shots and swinging shots, portrait and panoramic, swinging, swaying, spinning, turning, staggering, upside down and sideways, zooming in and out , walking in and out and even running in and out. I tried with the lights on and with the lights off, with long exposures and short exposures, wide apertures and narrow ones with the flash last, with the flash first and even with the flash in the middle and that’s the one, out of sheer frustration, that I finally entered.

A great challenge that ended up by driving me to drink. So it turned out to be really much more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Cheers.
