Ok, we are now closed for any further entries (whew)!

I've been working on my judging for most of the morning, and should have this wrapped up shortly.

Wow, what a fantastic turnout for this contest. It’s overwhelming to say the least!

This will be the 3rd DSLR Speed Challenge that I have judged, and typically I like to give each contestant some feedback on their individual entries, as you have all worked so hard to create these images and share them with us. So it’s with a heavy heart that I have to say that it won’t be possible this time around, as there are 31 entries! So please forgive my lack of a personal, and individual critique.

This was incredibly difficult to judge – so I have made an attempt to adhere to what I would call a “pure” Depth of Field criteria:

• An aperture value at or below f/5.6
• One object (or portion of the photograph) that is absolutely tack sharp.
• Significant artistic juxtaposition between the focus and non-focus areas.
• Composition & Lighting
• And from a personal standpoint, I find that photographs with good DOF, exhibit a sharp focal point at the mid-ground. I have given deference to the photographs that showcase that quality. Your mileage may vary of course.

Again, it was exceptionally difficult for me to make a choice – all of the entries were remarkable in one way or another. If nobody minds, I am going to re-post the finalists (there will be 4 honorable mentions) and re-size the images, so that you don’t have to scroll back up this rather long page to find the winners.

Henry: I’m quite partial to portraiture, I like the detail of the face here (and the eyes), with a nice DOF. The girl in the background is a moderate distraction, but I liked this entry well enough to give it an HM.

IMAGE: http://i27.tinypic.com/259wi07.jpg
Joby: Excellent shot (wish I could take pictures this well), and the focus on the thumb, fore-finger, and the 2 piano keys is very nice. Wonderful composition.

IMAGE: http://i32.tinypic.com/j6su2t.jpg
Mike: The subject matter is a little passé for my tastes, but the lighting is perfect – and you’ve properly isolated a single element quite well.

IMAGE: http://i30.tinypic.com/2zodt7c.jpg
Tom: This is a lovely shot, and I really like how the wind caught that flag just right – so that it stuck out amongst all the others. Pity about the branches on the right (which I find distracting). Perhaps a new crop is in order? Otherwise, just great!

IMAGE: http://i30.tinypic.com/mwqrs3.jpg
Ed: Your work never disappoints! Great entry, though it might have been more interesting if that focal point was down 2 or 3 more tires. Excellent photo, and book worthy indeed.

IMAGE: http://i26.tinypic.com/2yo8we9.jpg
Daniel: If you ever wanted a “textbook” photograph that perfectly describes DOF, this would be it! Absolutely perfect isolation of a single point in the photograph. It was a toss up between you and Phil (that close – hold fingers ¼ inch apart)

IMAGE: http://i27.tinypic.com/23m2adz.jpg
Phil: To me this is perfection. Perfect placement of the post, and the wire on the left guides our eye right into the heart of the photograph. It’s well balanced, artistic, and I would be proud to have this picture hanging in my living room.

Again – GREAT entries everyone, you should all feel proud!

Congrats, Phil, and kudos to all participants, especially the winners and honorable mentions.

My hat's off to you too, Chris, for having such a tough contest to judge! Lots of entries (and really good entries) this time! I like the way you did the summary and the evals. Nicely done and a very good topic!

Congrats, everyone, and Chris, that was a tough subject to judge. I forgive you for not choosing mine (barely).
