In Martin Evening's LR2 book ( page 52, figure 2.8 ) he shows a picture of the custom file name template available in the import photos dialogue box. There is:

Custom Name (x of y)
Custom Name - Original File Number
Custom Name - Sequence
Custom Name

and others. But when I click on the template drop down box I have nothing but Custom Settings. Where did the list Evening shows go? How do I get them back? This is LR2.4.

They should be there by default.
Renaming is only available if you copy or move, or import from device, but you know that already.

Yep Rene, that is exactly what Evening shows and what seems should be there by default. But when I click on that drop down it has "Custom Settings" and "Edit" that's all. Custom settings is check marked but it does nothing and Edit brings up the template editor.

I have updated the original install to version 2.4. I've checked preferences, maybe I'll try resetting everything to default and see what I get.

Well, you could of course fairly simple create your own using "Edit"...

Sure, I can recreate them, but I'm more concerned with why my program is missing something that should be available by default. If I'm missing this I wonder if I'm missing other things as well that I don't know about.

Just do a search for Filename.lrtemplate. Most likely the content is still there, just in a different directory than Lightroom expected it to be. I'm not on a mac, so my files are located under:
"\Users\*USERNAME*\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Filename Templates\

Gear, Feedback (eBay (external link)), Web (external link), Blog (external link), FB (external link), Twitter (external link)

jacuff, I found the filename template folder in C:\Documents and Settings\the clarks\Application Data\Adobe\LIghtroom\Filename templates

In that folder are Custom Name, Custom Name - Original File Number, Custom Name - Sequence, Custom Name (xof y), Date - Filename, Filename, and Filename - Sequence, all of the templates that Rene and Martin Evening show. The template file is with the other LR folders like Develop Presets, Export Actions, Filter Presets, etc.

How do I tell if LR is not looking for the files in the right place?

Create a new one and do a search for it. The folder ou find it in will be where Lightroom is looking for them. Then you could just copy all the folders from the old Lightroom to the new Lightroom location.

jacuff, I created a new template and found it here:

my documents/my pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom Settings/Filename Templates

and the only template in there is my new one. This set of LR folder in My Docs appears to have the same folders as the other set.

So, why do I have two sets of LR folders? Which one should I be using? How do I make LR point to the right ones? I haven't found anything about LR program folder structure in googling or reading.

Thanks for your help.
