I'm used to the stellar performance of the Pentax Takumar and SMC 50mm lenses but I wanted a true effective focal length of around 50mm. SO I found a sears Auto 28mm f2.8. It's made by Ricoh. Super solid and smooth feel. Not stellar at f2.8 bummer. Fine to great at f5.6 and up. Here's one from a car show on my Pentax K100D 6mp DSLR. I do LOVE the 42mm focal length it simulates on the 1.5x crop K100D.

Shot by the Pentax K100D ant Sears Auto 28mm f2.8 M42 screwmount at f2.8. See lens here: http://www.flickr.com …digitalanalog/3482167974/ (external link) . I have been so spoiled by my Takumars and Pentax SMC 50mm lenses that I was hoping this one would be tack sharp at f2.8. Not so. The point of focus was on the front foot peg below the first cylinder on the motor. It creates odd eliptical spectral highlights at f2.8 (see shiny spots on black motorcycle behind the featured one). It reminds me of the performance of a Canon 50mm f1.0 wide open. Perhaps this would be useful for a wild portrait effect or impressionistic flower shot. Colors are unedited and I think it does well in the color rendition arena.

Fine from f5.6 and up though... so a good car show lens or other well lit venues.

Whew! I can't get a post in edgewise around here!;);)

Here's some from the manual focus vintage Sears 80-200 f4 Macro K mount on my K100D. Around f8. Sure there's a little PP on each and a B&W conversion. See the lens itself here: http://www.flickr.com …digitalanalog/3604541911/ (external link)

Where did you guys get your lenses? I am finding them on Ebay for -ahem- 'inflated' prices.. Is there a store I could walk into and pick one up locally (NYC) that won't gouge the crap out of me?

Rather than post a new thread, I thought I'd ask here...

What do you guys use as focusing aids?

I'm using a Leica 50mm R on my 5dmk2 right now with the AF confirmation chip adaptor...it's pretty good, but still a chore to focus at times to get it just right.

I've heard that replacing the focusing screen is a better choice, line up the image in circle in the viewfinder and the subject is in focus...Anyone using replacement focusing screens with their MF lenses?

Thanks so much, lovely pics on this thread; simply awesome!

I use liveview if focusing with large apertures or fine detail.

Pawn shops and thriftshops...

I went into a pawn shop today, picked up a Porst Reflex C-TL for 10 bucks  It has a 55mm 1.4 stocker. It's filthy, it has a ring of grime around the mirror (more like soot)..it's glorious :D

Only other 50mm I found today was a Vivatar 50mm f1.7. He only wanted $50 for it, and iirc that is a K mount. This will work with my 1ds yes? I read and saw it being used on a 5dmII so I assume it will.

The optional MF focusing screen is a definite improvement over the stock screen...but still not as nice as pre-AF focusing screens on 35mm cameras.

I hate the confirm chip, BTW....I "focus" on using my own judgement...it is quicker, with practice....and....whenever possible I stop down a click from wide open to give me just a tad more DoF for good measure...makes a big difference in IQ as well...

Thanks very much!

I guess practice makes perfect ;)

Plus the experimentation and all the beautiful accidents adds to the wonder of it all.
