Here`s a little shot with the D700..

nice, why do you shoot both out of curiosity? and that's something I'd do in a heartbeat if I could afford to.

yeah, seems smaller/slower but like a great group of guys.
fredmiranda.com has a good nikon section as well, especially if you're selling.

Please don't ever post another picture like this.......... ........ Without posting the settings! I'm going to Cape Town and I'll be running into this situation alot.....I need to know your settings for this WONDERFUL pic.

Will

EXIF is intact:

Camera Make: Canon

Camera Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Image Date: 2009:08:23 06:49:19

Flash Used: No

Focal Length: 19.0mm

CCD Width: 5.28mm

Exposure Time: 0.017 s (1/60)

Aperture: f/11.0

ISO equiv: 400

Exposure Bias: -0.33

White Balance: Auto

Metering Mode: Matrix

Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)

and the D700 is here. It's VERY impressive. I've been tweaking custom settings for a while now getting it to make sense. The menus ARE NOT THAT BAD. Worse yes, but not terrible. The color scheme almost bugs me as much as the layout which is to say it's not that bad. This thing is a beast though. This will be a VERY tough decision.

of course I've yet to look at a single pic more than on the rear screen...

I wish I had explored nikon before buying my 5dII. I love it, but I'm shooting 10mp most of the time, and not happy with the AF, so maybe a 700 was for me. Too committed with glass right now, and still a relative newbee, so it would be crazy to switch, but still wish I had explored the option.

Good luck.

I bought a few different cameras and had the money invested already. Sold what I didn`t like and kept the money invested, but never even considered selling my 5DMKII. After having the D40 and D90 with great results, I sold my 5D and D90 to buy the D700 because I like FF cameras. I`m not worried about the money.
I just can`t part with either system because they`re so different to me.

If you had a strobe you could test the CLS ..It`s great.

yeah, selling lenses (especially canon lenses here) is so easy, I won't let that hold me up... Although I've heard selling nikon gear is harder, so a switch back to canon could be tough, or more costly?

but yeah, I basically figured I owed it to myself to know. I like FPS bodies and I like FF so the D700 is really the only option for me if I want both. But it's gotta be a god damned nikon right? Now I'm REALLY wishing canon would have made one. When I was ignorant I lived with the 5Dii happily, but now with a nikon in my lap it's a much tougher choice.

yeah, I haven't decided yet, but this is going to be VERY tough in the end. There's another issue as well... The D700 has a $300 rebate right now that ends TONIGHT! It's been continued a BUNCH of times, each time they say it won't, and they're saying that again now. The body would cost me ~$2350 shipped from adorama tonight. But I feel they'll be coming out with both a D700x and D700s soon. So do I hold off with just an XSi until the 7D and D700 variants hit? Do I get a D700 now and just enjoy it and take a hit selling it used to upgrade it if I feel the need?

I'm toying with the idea of ordering the D700 tonight though. I'd really love to figure out how I could shoot both systems, even if it was with a 5D and D700 for a while. It's going to be VERY hard to part with a few of my lenses, others I could give a damn and will go w/o any tears.

Yup, it was lenses that ultimately kept me with Canon. I couldn't part with my 85L, 100-400, and a few of the wide primes. And, I can't justify shooting two systems. Maybe next go-around Canon will build a D700. I just hope it isn't 3 years in the waiting.

heh - almost made it through the whole thread...
Wait and see what Canon announces and if the 7D is your deal, jump ship to Nikon. You should try it (D700) just to cure your curiosity. Shoot with it for a month or so and then decide. Or does someone have one you can borrow?
Personally, I love the 1d mk III for everything but you're not going to go that route. I'm also not sure I could go back to 'old tech' for my primary body?

Ben,

Get another 5DII and a U/W housing frome Ikelite. They have all the barrels and bulkheads you'll need. Not cheap, but the way to go. I have shot Ikelite housings over the years in the video world and love them. On tripod? no problem, the baseplate screw for the side grab handles is the same thread pitch and location. Filters? How often are you swapping and can you tolerate going to a known safe dry area for 5 minutes to swap out? The housings are rugged but let you get to all features. The only issues I can see is possible added lens flare from the extra layer of glass and a possibility of needing to clean salt spray off of the glass periodically.

NO camera thatis not specifically made for submerged use should be expected to hold up to salt water, Canon marketing on environmental seals be damned. No way I'd ever expect a "sealed" lens to stand up to that pervasive corrosive agent known as salt water.

Whole housing can be closed, submerged and soaked in cool clean water to leach out salt from all moving parts/seals, regrease O-rings lwith a thin sheen of Silicone grease as necessary. If you are not submerging/exposing to pressure at depth, then the interval only relies on how quickly the seals gather dust.

hope this helps, shot lots of video and some photo in Okinawa Japan over the past 2 decades.

Dave

Anything less than the digic/bit processors currently in use. I think it does add something to the image! Also I do prefer the current lineups LCD's, menu, layout, etc. etc. etc.

Ahh, I gotcha, I agree. Things like the LCD's, new menu systems, etc., don't seem like much on paper, but they definitely make the camera nicer to use in the field.

I will be watching this thread closely.I have been thinking of selling all of my Canon gear and switching to Nikon.I am going to wait and see what is announced Tuesday.I am unhappy with the 50D at iso 1600 or above.I love the high iso shots that I have seen from the D700.I know it is a lot closer between your 5Dii and the D700 than it would be between my 50D and the D700.

I have thought about going to the 5DII but I can't justify the extra expense for what you get over the D700.Video does not do anything for me.I look foward to seeing some of your shots from the D700.
