I've been so busy shooting that I didn't bother to check firmware updates for my 40D. Now that I checked I noticed two different updates.

The first available firmware update is: 40D v 1.1.1 (external link)it states that is to update from 1.0

The second firmware update is:
WFT-E3-E3A for 40D/50D Firmware 2.0.0 it states that is to update from 1.1

The Questions:
1. Since my current firmware is 1.0.8 which one should I install?
2. I didn't see an update from 1.0.8 to 1.0 and then to 1.1.x so what do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance for the help

If you don't use the "Wireless transmitter" (which is WFT-E3 or WFT-E3A)
you do not have to install that 2nd firmware.

Every update includes all the changes made by all the previous ones. Just install the latest.

Are you saying that is okay to install the 1.1.1 update on my current firmware which is 1.0.8 because the 1.1.1 update can handle it?

I just want to be safe, that's all. The least I want to do is to ruin my camera and end up taking to Canon for firmware update install.

So, has anyone done what tzalman is recommending?

Its fine, update to the latest. Firmware updates overwrite EVERYTHING on the ROM they aren't like incremental updates like on a computer.

Yeah I went from 1.0.8 to 1.1.1 without any problem. As Replaces said above, you dont need to worry about installing the Wireless transmitter update unless you are actually using one.

There are two ways to install the update and I would recommend using the memory card proceedure. Doing it via a computer is a little too risky for me.

Yeah, I updated my 1.0.8 software to 1.1.1 using the CF procedure. Just follow the instructions exactly and you'll be fine.

hmm having problems updating to 1.1.1 firmware.....

I get the following message and then won't let me install it...here's the message:

"Battery level is too low. Cannot update" with an [OK] button, so I select OK and it goes back to the Firmware Ver screen.

I tried this with two freshly recharged batteries.... I do see the low battery warning flashing on the top screen and I have my 70-200 mm F2.8 IS lens.

Any recommendations?
