7d means the end of the xxD series?

so with all the rumors about the 7d, am i safe to assume there won't be a 60d?

If the 7D really exists as spec'd, I wouldn't be suprised if there was never a 60D.
Might just be the end of the XXD line.

Why couldn't there be a 60D, with specifications somewhere in between the 50D and the 7D?
Seems to be enough room in there for that. Keep resolution at 15 Mpix, add video and some other small goodies to keep people happy, and they are all set. Costwise it's probably also possible to have something between the 500D and the 7D without too much hassle.

The 7D as rumored means it is a much higher level camera than a 50D. It would likely be priced around the same as a nikon d300 or maybe a bit more. I would think there would still be room for a ~$1200 camera in the lineup.

What they need to prune is the Rebel lineup!

Yes, tons of Rebels. Can't argue that.
But I'd imagine (ie guess) they sell 3 Rebels for every 1 XXD.
Would love to see the breakdown of their camera sales, but have never been able to find it.

Not really. The Rebel range is probably the most important sector because once you have got that customer into the brand, they are likely to upgrade within the brand and generate even more sales for the company. I know some people do switch brands but most stick with it especially if they have invested in additional lenses.

You mean they're still manufacturing the XT, XTI and XS? I thought those were all discontinued?

Canon USA still lists the T1i, XSi, XS, Xti all as current models. I have heard a 2000D is on the horizon. I know they sell a bunch of rebels and it is an important segment, but how about pruning it down to 2-3. At least discontinue the old ones when you come out with new models.

What's the point with that? If they have space in the production lines, or have them flexible enough to produce 400D, 450D and 500D in the same line, then just let them roll through as long as they are generating income.

That means that people who don't want to invest more than for the 1000D, but don't like the small size of the camera, can still buy some older sibling to the 500D at the same cost.
Like magic, they are inside the brand family and the probability that their next camera is a Nikon has been reduced significantly.

I understand why they do it, I was just saying that if any segment is crowded, it will be the under $1000 line. There should be no problem having a "60D" and a 7D in the $1000-2000 segment.

I'm more thinking why would Canon bring out a 60D, when it took them so long to update the 40D to a 50D.

Again could be said about 5D and 5D2...

The 7D is the 60D, IMO.

The 50D will remain in the lineup till next spring, when it will be replaced with a more compact body.
Might be called the 60D but they might change the name too - Rebel?

Canon won't continue selling a 6.5fps magnesium-alloy body for the same price as the plastic D90.
