I mean what else could they add to the 60D to call it an upgrade? More fps? Video recording? It's about time they update the AF system.

I must admit I am rather baffled by the name 7D, I personally think the 50D will not be followed by a 60D, or if it is, it will be inferior to the 7D in some way, but they are just doing what they have done with the 5D, the 7D is the best 1.6 Crop for speed focus etc., The 5D MK2 is a FF for IQ, so the 2 best cameras below the 1 series that they class as Pro cameras

AF has been updated on every camera in the series except 30d. now the 7d has pro AF and other pro features.

They haven't updated the xxD series cameras with more AF points.

I don't know if 16AF points on the 7d is professional but it's something new.

not quantity, but quality. every increment they've added things like f/2.8 sensitivity and more cross-type sensors.

I think there's slightly more to the 7D that puts it a class ahead of the xxD series.

There's the integrated ST-E2, more focus points, new metering system, better video (or even - at all, but I'm not really looking for that in a camera), weather sealing.

I think this will be a great update for people who shoot xxD bodies on a (semi)pro level.

i guess i don't understand the desire or need for more points. i have the 1d and 1ds mark III and both are pared back to 9 selectable points.

I think the auto focus puts it in a class above the xxD series.
I not making any claims to how good it is, just a pure observation.

Joemt.

Agreed.

"So why 7D and not 70D "

Canon has created a new camera line with the 7D. Dual CPU's new pro autofocus, near 1-series weather seals, 1-series style hand grip, etc.

Unlikely. It's clear that Canon wants to keep high end features and performance in the pro category in the single digit model numbers. The 60D next Spring will get video, new sensor design (but still 15MP). It can't get everything the 7D has, has to have a reason for pricing difference.

See above. 7D is a pro-level camera and the 7D is not the 60D. 60D will follow in the Spring and will continue its evolution at a $1200 or so price tag.

Well time will tell, would not classify 7D a pro level, but then I don't the 5D MK2 either, but that is not IQ related, as for Autofocus being so called Pro, again not really, it just the progression of technology, and once again once the 1D's upgraded it would not be classed as pro then.
Though you maybe right regarding the 60D I was not really thinking of pricing, But Canon are bunching up models and pricing so much now, it will start to get on peoples nerves, to much choice can be an issue, and more may move to Nikon

The 7D's AF layout is likely a debut of the talked about new AF of the mk IV 1-series due out next Spring. The 19 points the 7D has is likely the 19 cross type AF sensors of the new 1-series AF system. The new 1-series AF will probably have more assist points taking it over 45 point total. Plus the 7D's AF points are cross type with f5.6 lenses which the current 1-series AF is not - only f2.8 lenses.

Canon is in a sense "showing its hand" for what is to come with the new 1-series models starting next Spring, i.e. AF, sensor technology, continually increasing MP count, VF overlay, digital horizon, movie mode, etc.
