Sell 1DMIII for 7D?

Also, I wish to add for those who are wondering: "So who would buy a 7D then?" 7D are mainly for current 40D (or lower) owners. Why? Because it's the next step up in the semi-pro lineup and the big jump from entry-level. Just like XSi owners shouldn't jump on T1i but XT or XTi owners who aren't too serious about photography and has no ambition in becoming professional want a better body in the entry-level lineup.

maybe a bit arrogant statement considering a lot of "pros" are using the 5d and have no intentions in upgrading to a 1d. I would never consider a body to be specific to the word professional. each body to each owner and specific task.

maybe arrogant was a strong word from me but what I meant was that its impossible to put the line up in "boxes" - who should by what. Im sorry no pun intended.:o

I see what you mean, but looking at things from Canon's perspective, I imagine that's how they target their market. They try to cater to specific groups of people which is why they compete model for model against other brands and even among their own lineup. They have an entry-level, semi-pro and pro lineup to cater to those groups or attract others belonging to other groups to switch over. An entry-level body owner for example might want to jump up or a semi-pro body owner finds photography not his/her cup of tea and finds entry-level bodies sufficient.

What I said previously wasn't intended to segregate different groups of photographers... separating enthusiasts from professionals. There are people out there who don't wish to make a living out of shooting pictures but have an eye for photography.

No way on earth would I sell my mk3 for a 7d, I may be a lot of things but im not simple lol.

What if the 7D focus as fast and has equal IQ?

Well I have my original 5D. Im thinking of selling and going to the 7D. It has everything i want other that FF. I love sports and macro. Sometimes ill do portrait. I'm not a pro, just a guy that love's camera's lol.

I'm on the fence and don't know what to do. If the photo's are awesome out of the 7D then why not? But then again i can buy both . I'm just not sure what to do here.

The 1.6x bring things out of whack. Ain't no way I'm buying an EF-S lens when I have EF lenses that covers that range even on my 1DMKIII.

I really like the 1.3x. If you need wide, buy a FF.

Heck, if it weren't for the semiconductor economics, there would never have been ANY crop sensors. What I'd like to see is a 1dmk3 body with the same AF, same gorgeous image quality but a FF sensor. I want to shoot sports full frame at 10fps.

not the same but traded my 1dmk2 to get the 7d.1d2 and 1d3 owners will notice a huge drop in secondhand price very soon if not already, although the 1d4 is not here yet alot of people think like the op as with a 1d4 on the market price will drop alot again. look at the 1ds2 after the release of the 5dmk2, as well i think alot of people is getting the 5dmk2 instead of the 1ds3 so basically i would sell the 1d3 if im not happy with it. but if im happy with it keep it until it dies ...

I did the same thing with my original Digital Rebel about a month before the 20D was announced. I got a great resale price, almost all my money out of it, and 20D was such an obvious step up....

These days we're on a less steep part of the technology curve, so I'd expect less change in the resale value just as the incremental technological improvements are not quite as compelling to upgrade.

That said, I think this might be the one to replace my 20D!

I just bought a 1D3 s/h on Monday too. We'll see.

The Mark III has the best IQ of any Canon I've used but you can't help wonder what this "new tech" might bring out.

I'm really excited though with the release as this will push Canon even harder to make the new 1D camera kick serious a$$.

i think the 7d is a fine camera at a good price point. one recent trend is to add more bells and whistles as well as MPs, which i hate. one review of the 7d talks about the complexity of the controls. if true that's a major turn-off for me.

one thing i really love about the 1d mark III is the ergonomics. i'm the kind of guy who has to flip all three light switches in my own house almost everytime to get the right one but i can operate the 1d mark III usually without looking (unless my brain locks up). the new ID bodies are a joy to use. i just love them.

what is important to me to be able to shoot at hi ISOs with little or no noise. that is a big deal for me which does preclude the 1.6 crops unless as a back-up.

when the 40d came out it was reportedly the new canon IQ leader and absolutely slayed the 5d at hi ISOs. well that didn't turn out to be the case.

the 7d will hit the market and eventually the pink cloud will pass. let's see where we are at then .

I agree with Ed ^^^^^. The 1D3 controls are perfect! As simple as the 5D is, I have a harder time navigating that body versus my 1D3. I've got my 1D customized just for me and how my brain works. That is the real beauty of the 1D3.
