I'm very curious to see how well the AF works, and to a lesser extent the metering. If these represent a major advance over existing non-1 series Canon's (or over some people's 1 D III's ;), pre repairs etc.) then that would be a huge reason to upgrade to this camera. The pixels and the noise etc. don't matter much if the shot is out of focus!

My thoughts exactly.
I just hope it drives as good on the road as it looks in the showroom.

ha this camera looks so promissing, aparently the folks at canon put the same trigger that is present on the 1d3 cameras :D

also another thing, a friend of mine is a noink user, ive played with nikons CLS feature, you know the same wireless flash crap there is on this camera, even if i set teh mode to "not to affect the picture " it does, you can easily see this when you shoot yoursefl on a mirror.

it doesnt affect much tho, if you use a high powered flash i mean. perhaps canon will have solved this problem ?

i might buy 1 of these by chrissmass ;)

also any white papers out :D ?

Hope you already preordered :) Preorders are sold out at Amazon..and a lot of people are predicting this thing is going to be like the 5D2...Very difficult to obtain for the next few months sadly...

I don't think that will be the case.I am pretty sure Canon has been building the 7D's for a month if not more.I am sure they are going into overdrive with the holidays coming up.No company wants to short handed going into the prime selling season.

I may well be replacing my 40D with it, it's a far more serious 1.6x crop camera with some impressive features, but it's never going to be my primary camera. This new camera gives me a lot of hope for the next generation of 1D/1Ds and 5D cameras.
I love the output from my current 5DII, but the rest of the camera is very old tech. I still use my old 5D a lot too, again great output. But it does feel like a £800 camera instead of the £2000 I paid for it many many moons ago. Like wise with the 5DII, it does handle and feel like a £800 camera. It's out put though is as good as it gets....which is why I use it.

As for ISO50, my 30D has it, I've never once used it..I've never had a situation where i needed to...I think ISO50 was omitted because if you made it perform well at ISO 50 everyone would **** that 1600 or 3200 sucked :)

Sorry for the OT. I've got a 30D. How do you access the ISO50? Never saw it in the manual. Did I miss something?

Can I just say how refreshing it is to see an honest evaluation of the 5D/5DII from an owner--somebody who can freely acknowledge its handling shortcomings while lauding its image quality. It's these kinds of honest and balanced assessments that we need more of, not all these, "OMGWTFBBQ it's teh awesome!" types of comments we see too much of. Thanks :)

On the subject of handling and feel, famous wedding photog Jeff Ascough digs it (external link). In his post and comments he says this:

"If you blindfolded me, and put a 5DMKII in one hand and 7D in the other - I would have said that the 7D was the more expensive camera."

"Kevin - you know, the fact that it is cropped doesn't really affect the way it handles. Bring it up to the eye and it feels like a 1 series camera."

Sounds like Canon weren't kidding when they bragged about how much 1-series DNA is in the 7D. Now if we can see a 5DII replacement with all the 7D tech in it by next year, we'll be set!

So...how important would you say an "expensive feel" is to you when making a purchasing decision? Just wondering.

On a scale of 1 to 10? Zero :) If you're equating "expensive" with "solid", hmm... maybe a 5? Don't know. Never tried to quantify it.

I believe you need to enable extended ISO (custom functions?) and then it will show up as "L".

I love Jeff's work and he's a huge influence on my wedding and social documentary work. Between him and George Weir, I can't recomend their seminars enough. Even if you aren't interested in the business side...just to see their work is enthralling. If you are lucky, they willl show you a whole wedding and it's great to see all of the pictures in context and not as one off pieces of art. I've met Jeff a number of times over the last few years and I have to say that he's very friendly and approachable, especially with gear. But he doesn't suffer muppets gladly and he is very to the point.

I really don't think the 30D has ISO50. ISO expansion only allows you to go up to ISO3200 (otherwise you are limited to ISO1600). I thought that was only a feature on the 5D (and higher models?).

Will the 7d have something like TAv. You set the aperture and shutterspeed and the metering sets the ISO for proper exposure. Ive been waiting for this feature sense I bought my 300D.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.
