Hello,
I'm pretty new to photography, but I have realized that L lenses are truly worth their weight in gold.
So I would like to purchase a few L's.
My wish list is as follows:
24-70mm f2.8
70-200mm f2.8
100-400mm

Now I have saved my pennies and been reading the forums and there are always rumours around that a new lens is just weeks away.
Should I wait for a new version to come out or just try to buy a lens now?
I'm willing to wait a few months, but I definitely want to get some before the end of the year.

Thanks for any advice you might have,
Michael.

Only you can answer this question. It's very subjective.

I was more interested in whether the rumours were actually true?

I have heard that around this time and around April lots of rumours come around and none of them ever come true.

Just wondering....

New lenses were announced just a couple weeks ago including an L lens. There is a waiting list for at least that one lens. (100mm f/2.8L IS)

If you wait for new things to come out you are missing shots in the mean time. Get what you'd like to use now. It's not like you lose much money if you decide to sell a lens later.

You could wait years for some of them to be updated - or even decades - and miss out on many, many photo opportunities in the meantime. Buy now and even if it's superseded tomorrow you can count yourself lucky that you saved some money on the newer version that's sure to be and stay more expensive for quite some time ;)

There will always be rumors. Buy what you need as you need it and can afford it. Don't spend your time worrying about what will or might be coming, just get what you need and go out and take some pictures.

Why wait because of the rumors? Rumors are easy to start. Here I'll show you. . .

The last time I waited for something new to be released:
a) The release never came
b) I missed hundreds of great photo opportunities

If it seems like a release is certain and you have the funds for an upgrade, I'd wait. Good example is the new 100L macro. Otherwise I'd just get your lens and enjoy it.

Maybe a new lens is to be announced just weeks away, but likely not to be released very soon. If a new 24-70, 70-200, or 100-400 were to be released in a few weeks Canon would have made it know along with the 15-85 and the 100L.

I've just posted the latest September announcements from Canon on another post, but they are here:

Nothing in your categories but the hybrid IS is interesting, but more for macro work. I would definitely recommend the brick, the 24-70mm f/2.8L; sheer class; the 70-200mm I have the f/4 IS and I must say I value that over the weightier 70-200mm 2.8. It is personal choice but you have to justify that extra stop and weight and money to yourself bigtime. Also to get IS on the 2.8 is a lot more $$$. My advice is go to a camera store and look at and feel the 70-200mm f/4 with IS and worship the Canon Gods  Don't know the other 100-400mm; I would get the low end first and also a decent tripod then decide later about the superteles

Canon 450D, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, 17-40mm f/4L, 24-70mm f/2.8[COLOR=Red]L[COLOR=Black], 70-200mm f/4[COLOR=Red]L[COLOR=Black] IS, 200mm f/2.8L, 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS usm, EF 50mm f/1.8 II

The only thing you get by waiting is a price hike with the new version. Get what you need today, that includes cameras.

the rumors about the 24-70L and 100-400L have been around for a few years so they haven't been true.

When I bought my 5D there were persistent rumors of a 5D2 (or 3D, or 7D) coming at any moment. As it turned out, the 5D2 was actually more than a year in coming from when I bought my 5D and it had no improvement in the features that I was most interested in having improved. I'm glad I didn't wait as I would now still be waiting for the 5D Mark III.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII
