Missed focus as a result of a flawed autofocus system is one of the very few situations where a missed shot can legitimately be blamed on the camera and not the photographer (how is the photographer supposed to prevent the autofocus system from missing focus if he does his part of keeping the focus point on the subject -- focus manually instead?).

* * *

I was looking at the Fred Miranda forums 7D discussion, and there were several days worth of posts where just about all posts were complaints about how the 7D didn't have interchangeable focus screens and how manual focus would be terrible. For those folks, I think the camera will always be at fault, even with manual focus! ;)

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

After thinking about the 7D for the past week or so and reading threads in several forums, my main complaint is that I have to wait until next year to buy one :(

There's no perfect camera, but life is still good :D

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

Canon T4i (2 lenses), Fuji X100s, Olympus OM-D EM-1 (3 lenses)

Well to be fair, that is one of the cameras faults, a minor one but a fault none the less. I enjoy my Katz-eye but with the sharp screen of the 50D I find live view a better tool to focus accurately and I'm suspecting that the 7D will be no different.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Because if I knew the 7D was coming with features wanted, I wouldn't have bought the 50D (lacking features I wanted) only a few months ago and waited. So I've essentially spent my 7D money on a 50D.

That's why I'm upset.

Dude, you've had a whole thread to rant and rave about this here. As stated, people are not on board with your sentiment, so let it go.

If you want the 7D that bad, sell your 50D for as much as you can, buy the 7D, and have fun shooting. Or here's an idea you could keep your 50D,

It's pretty irritating to see a forum like POTN get like this when a release is announced. I open up the EOS Camera Discussion forum and all I see is arguments and ranting and raving about the 7D. Some are positive, but many are not. No one even has the camera yet - they're just on preorder. How long is it gonna be like this?

For those irritated that it wasn't a full frame camera, not sure I understand. You just recently got the 5dii. The Rebel line just got the T1i. It was time for the crop bodies to get theirs.

Seems like those with rebels, or XXd cameras are happy with the 7d, other than those who feel like canon is out to get them by allowing them to purchase a 50d weeks prior to its release. The main people irritated are those with 5dii's who basically don't like the fact that a cheaper camera was released with features they wish they got.

This is how technology works guys. It's like this with anything. If you golf, better clubs with better features will come out at a fraction of the cost. Heck, if you make wood carvings, better blades are gonna come out. And yes, it may be days after you just bought yours. You won't escape it, so just embrace it. Be thankful that you can still make great images with the equipment you have.

I for one am refusing to get all bent out of shape about it. Maybe that's easy to say since I am not negatively affected by it. Nevertheless, I'll go outside, take some pictures, learn, and steer clear of these threads from now on.

You can go back to your bickering now!

Canon could have been a little more forthcoming, or downpriced the 50D's a bit. Give us some idea that there would be a predecessor that would actually be better, not like the 40D to 50D jump. I called them b*****d's several times to get an idea if the 50D would be solid for awhile. Not even a hint as to desired features in a new camera could be out this fall.

I don't have time to be a full time consumer like you or lot's of other folks. I expect companies to be on the level and not sell you yesterdays garbage just to meet their bottom line.

The 50D has been on the market for an entire year, which up until the 50D's release was about 2/3rd's of the way thru a product cycle. The 60D will still be coming. The 7D is something new. And Canon doesn't have a responsibility to tell you what its gonna come out with, you just have to wait and see just like the rest of us. Stop ****, you would have missed out on all the shots you took with your 50D since you got it.

And no matter what people tell you, the 50D was a BIG jump from the 40D (which I have and love, and will relegate to back-up duties once I get my 7D). For a difference in price of $100 over the original price of the 40D, they added 50% more resolution (15MP vs. 10MP), a greatly improved screen (920k pixels vs. 230k pixels), Higher ISO (12800 vs. 3200), ALO, Micro Lens Adjustments, its a BIG upgrade... but its never enough for the whiners of the world.

If your issue is that your bragging rights have been impeded by the newest release. You need to grow up.

Only idiots among producers would harm their own sales by stating that they'll soon release something else, something which implies that buying the current product isn't the smartest thing to do.

Only idiots among consumers don't see that connection.

Because everyone loves to measurebate stats and numbers instead of being happy with what they have and shooting pictures. I love my 5D MKII. Yes the 7D has newer technology but it is expected in this industry. Suck it up.

oh god..... wtf is with these threads?

boredom, perhaps?

But, to answer the original question, I think those who are grumbling about the 7D fall into a few distinct categories:

1 - those who upset because their predictions were wrong, mad at Canon for making them look bad

2 - those who are upset because Canon didn't make the model they thought Canon should have made (how dare Canon..!!)

3 - those who are upset because their signifigant other won't let them buy another camera that they "obviously don't need"

4 - those who are upset because they just bought a new camera recently and can't afford to go out and buy another new one.

5 - those who are upset because they CAN afford to buy a 7D and just can't find anything else to complain about

I'm sure there are others, I'm just not bored enough to try and guess who they may be

I have a 5D that is almost 3 years old and I still haven't unlocked all the potential of that camera. The images I am able to make with that camera no matter what the situation or light continues to amaze me. My other camera is a 10D which is over 5 years old and I still use that camera and get great shots.

I have never understood the upgrade envy people have when it comes to technology because it's a fight you will never win. I can guarantee that most people that have upgrade envy and are complaining about these cameras are not even near the potential of their craft, and should be spending their camera upgrade money on photography classes, or a trip to a far off beautiful place to take photos. Or put that money into that great lens you always wanted and open up an whole new world for your old camera.

The only reason you should be sitting in front of your computer is because you are excited to process the photos you just took, not to whine and pine about something you can't and wont ever be able to change.

Upgrade when your level of skill requires it, not to compensate for what you perceive as your limitations.

Does any of this really come as a great surprise? It happens to some extent EVERY time there is a new release. They will be someone for whom the camera doesn't live up to their expectations. I think if Canon combined all the desired features into one camera there would still be someone who would complain.

This thread is simply incomprehensible. We are apparently pissed off because of technological advancement?

Similar stuff wasn't included with the 5D2?

That body was released in December 2008! I honestly don't get people's thinking for crying out loads; let's hault all new releases, something better is on the horizon it would be better in all our economic interests to wait for...

..oh wait

Christ

Yes, we have a right to be upset that this stuff wasn't included on the 5D2. Nikon had its top-level, very good AF on the D700 by then, selling for less money than the 5D2. It was an insult to Canon users that $2700 didn't buy some serious improvement in the autofocus system compared to the original 5D. Canon had three years to work on this body. OK, let's assume the new 19-point AF system wasn't ready yet. There are nine cross-type sensors in the 40D and 50D. Why aren't all nine sensors in the far more expensive 5D2 cross-type? That wouldn't have required any new technology, such as we're now seeing in the 7D. It couldn't have cost much to include, but would have made the 5D2 a far more capable camera.

I own a 5D2. The files are gorgeous, but the autofocus, other than the center point, is simply third rate. Nikon moved the goalposts, while Canon was resting on its laurels. Video, for me, is not important. Being able to produce sharp, focused, still photographs of music performance under dim lighting, is what I need my cameras to do. The 5D2 has the sensor for low light work. But it lacks the ability to focus off center that two previous generations of xxD bodies already had. The new, 19-point AF system would have been a huge step forward for the 5D2. At the very least we should have been given the AF capability of the 40D and 50D.

The 7D is a worthy competitor to the Nikon D300s. There is still no Canon model to fill the slot of the D700: a more affordable, lighter, genuinely all-around full frame body.

Sounds like the 5dMKII owners are the only ones upset?

Not me. I am fine, thank you. Nonetheless, it is interesting and enjoyable to investigate the "latest" technology. Just because one already has a perfectly satisfactory camera doesn't mean one has to stick one's head in the sand.

Or, as a happily married friend of mine says, "Just because I've already ordered it doesn't mean I can't still look at the menu. . ."
