Hello, i am looking for a -10 screw in neutral density filter for my 16-35 , is there such a thing and can they be stacked so get like -20 stops less light ?
Any suggestions and ideas would be welcomed .

I wish B+W made this filter in 82mm. I'd be all over it. The only thing I can recommend is the Singh Ray Vari-N-Duo or Vari-ND.

Cokin = color cast, quite bad :/ i have them (ND8 and GND) and this is one of reason they stay on shelf most of the time. :s Now i think if i have need for them and money i will buy better make.

Hitech do a 10 stop square ND but some users online note a slight magenta cast (click (external link)).

If you're only ever going to be shooting with a crop camera like your 50D and you can buy locally then I'd try the B&W 77mm with a step-down ring. I think it's unlikely that 2.5mm intrusion would be visible to a 1.6x crop camera and you can always return it if it vignettes.

I will be at least till February next year . So @ 16mm would i get vignetting ?

EDIT : Looking at the price of a step down ring and the filter itself locally , i could just go ahead and order the Singh Ray ...

The Singh-Ray will only get you 8 stops of light reduction, tops...

this is why I **** about the 82mm thread on the 16-35mmII...

Format will make you a 10 stop in whatever size you need. They make 4x6 already, X-pro is custom order but they'll do it. Make sure if you use a panel filter you seal the gap between the filter and the holder or reflections will show up. ;)

As far as suggestions are concerned you could use a Gelatin Filter like this:

Not an ideal solution since they are delicate and any light coming into the side of a holder is going to be a major problem but your choices are limited it seems. Does that lens have a rear gel holder? That would make the gels a lot better to use.

Are the Format filter at least 2mm thick? If so, I'm ordering one! :)

Contact HP Marketing, the US Heliopan distributer. Heliopan will make a 10-stop screw-in ND filter for you. I use one with my 16-35. http://www.hpmarketingcorp.com/ (external link)

I see that you are in Europe, so you may be able to contact Heliopan directly.
