For what it is worth, a quick comparison of the 35L and the 50L:

35L wide open f/1.4, 1/8000th, iso100

35L f/8, 1/256th, iso100 cropped

I found I was cropping my 35L images often, and in that case my 50L always produced a sharper image. With my 35L I felt I always had to get "in the face" of my subjects. I prefer to be a little more stealth, which the 50L suits me more comfortably.

50L wins in this little contest hands down

I voted for the 35L, but I use the 28f/1.8 on my 20D, so I guess I would probably be more comfortable with the 50L...but I want them both :)

If I am feeling lazy I will take a 35L (autofocus) , besides I love the focal length.

If I really want to go light I take a 50 (I have the 1.4). It also makes the camera a whole lot smaller.

My all time favorite though is the 45 because when I am feeling lazy or weak I will often kick myself for leaving my 45 at home because I am bound to see something that the 45 is perfect for. Like this:

I think I would put the 35L on, but.......have a 85 1.8 in the vest pocket.

From Woof's comparisons, I would go w/the 50L. But that's just me.

I think i'm going to go for a new 35L to complement my lenses:
17-40=landscape
85 1.8=portrait
24-70=lazy walkaround
70-200=sports, zoo, etc.
35=In the mood for some good stuff  I think it will be glued to my 5D and when I pick up a 1d I'll glue the 70-200 to it
