50 f/1.8 bokeh/sharpness tests

Nifty Fifty seems to be the most popular upgrade lens; I decided to shoot 2.2 because someone said 1.8 is not sharp, but after my test I decided to convert to 2.8.

In conclusion, bokeh is nice from f/1.8-2.8, but loses its dreamy effect after f/2.8 and sharpness is good at f/2.8 and is great at f/4

If the 50/1.8 is an upgrade, I'd wonder from what? Can you tell I am not a fan?

Would the results look the same if the note book were at right angles to the camera?
The results tell you about bokeh, but I wonder about the sharpness. Perhaps I am missing something, but depth of field is going to be very small at close focus and F1.8.

I have often wondered this also !

I think the OP was calling it an "upgrade" lens in that it's the first lens a lot of people purchase after their experience with the "kit" lens that they first got with their (first) camera. I don't know that it's necessarily an upgrade, but I agree that it certainly is a new dimension when your only other experience is from an 18-55, 17-85, or 28-135.

I believe the real test for bokeh would be having some specular lights in the background. that will give a better idea of how apparent and distracting the aperture shape can possibly be. the 50/1.8 seems to do okay as long as the background remains low contrast.

The 50 1.8 isn't bad for the money, but I don't like mine. The AF SUCKS and is inaccurate - which is a big deal for lens that gives very shallow DOF! I find myself using my MF Zuiko 50mm f/1.8 instead. The bokeh, color, and sharpness is all better plus the shots are in focus even if it takes a while to MF.
