Calling all wedding shooters..

35L, and...that 85L

Jeff dont limit him self to two lenses .... he has 5 primes in his bag.

I primary use 5 primes and one zoom, most of them manual focus....

I think Jeff is "limited" to prime lenses since he's made a conscious decision to avoid using flash; f2.8 just won't cut it. I like his Cartier Bresson-style shooting, the guy sure knows how to capture "the decisive moment". I don't think the fact that he uses a 35 f1.4 as back up is such a big deal; it's fast, has a FL between his two main lenses and could probably replace either of them, if needed. The money I presume he makes, and the fact that he's a Canon Ambassador, probably means he can pick and choose whichever lens or body he likes, cost not being an issue.

Should I ever develop the skill needed to shoot weddings (I've tried at a friend's wedding, boy was it hard. My hat off to all you professional shooters) and have cash to spare, I would go with the 85 and 24 L on a couple of 5DII.

Handy topic for me, as I am obliged to shoot a small wedding ceremony.
Because I mainly have primes I am a bit scared, but told them strictly there is a big chance I screw up!
I have a 5D and 40D, and the lenses is my sig. As it will be at 4pm in the middle of october, it will be pretty dark. I think it will be pretty annoying to constantly use the flash in a small room.

So I was thinking of
- 5D + 24-105 + Flash and 40D + 35L (But I don't like flash)
- 5D + 35L for most of the pictures and 40D + 85 F1.8 for candit snapshots

I'd go with a 35L on a 5DII and the 100L on the 1DMarkIII. That would give be a decent wide angle, telephoto, and macro capabilities.

If only I had his talent, I'd be all set.

The 35L actually does make a decent backup to the 24L and 50L, because it really could replace either lens without needing much adjustment on the photographers side.

No he doesn't.

He uses: 24/1.4II, 35/1.4, 50/1.2, 85/1.2 and 16-35/2.8 and 70-200/4.

He typically uses a 16-35/2.8 over the shorter primes in summer months and good light.

And to answer your question I'd go with a 24 and 50.

clearly this q is more appropriate to togs who only use prime lenses to shoot wedding and similar events with, but all input welcome!

24L on the 1DMKIII & 85L on the 5DII. Its really all ya need.

I no longer shoot weddings switched over to all corporate/commercial/a​dvertising work 10 years or so ago and for a very long time I shot with a 35L & and 85L on two 5Ds. I even shot a couple of weddings (old clients that insisted I shoot them). I shot medium format (500 C/Ms) weddings for YEARS great photos and no zooms. and a 24L on a 1DMIII will give you a similar FoV as a 30mm on a FF and the 85L is just about perfect for portraits and available light candids.

Here scroll down to #2482 some of the best wedding stuff I've seen in a while and he (x2x3x4x5x) shot this wedding with a 35L and an 85L on FF. I think he said he shot 75% of the wedding with the 35L. (the 24L would give you a slightly wider FoV with 1DMKIII that the 35L on a FF camera. But you would really have some versatility with the two different camera formats and those two FL. Plenty actually.
