I'm not sure if you've tried these places so I'm just going to list a few.

The imaging world
Roberts imaging (indianapolis)
B&H photo
J&R.com
Cameta camera
Calumet camera?

I'm not sure how much they're going for now but during the rebate a few months ago they were selling for around the $1179 mark.

do rebates happen during a particular time or do you just have to keep checking for them periodically?

Wait until you can get the rebate plus the Christmas sale price plus Amazon gold box or bing cashback. Last Christmas it was $984 in the Amazon gold box.

everytime you shop something in amazon they throw in things to your goldbox that are discounted. these are items are somewhat related to whatever you bought from them.

i.e. if you buy photography stuff then they throw in things that are related to photography.

I don't know how low it will go but it will probably be a lot better than $1300. The Amazon gold box is a like a custom fitted sale of the day for Amazon members that is based on your browsing habits, purchases, and rating of items. You get about 5% off the regular price of an item. You do not have to buy an item to get the recommendation, you just rate it or say you own the 24-70 lens hood or a 77mm filter or something else that could be attached to the lens. Sometimes it can be hard to get a specific item in the box. If your item appears in the gold box you'll want to be prepared to buy it on the spot. Don't click on the item until you are prepared to buy it. Once you click on the discounted item in your gold box the deal will expire if you don't buy it within 1 hour. The account is free just sign up at Amazon. This Sticky will explain the rest.

It requires patience and a bit of input on your part. If you set up several accounts you may have better luck trying to get a specific item to appear in your gold box.

another quick question. does bing cash back only work for e-bay purchases or can you also use it through other authorized canon dealers. I'm tempted to bing the lens on e-bay, but kind of weary.
