From day one with the lens:

Really nice lens, I had to return it today though. Long story short, I wanted to extensively test both the Canon 100mm and the Tamron 90mm macro lenses, and they told me I could buy it and return it within 7 days for full cash back.

After loving it today and yesterday, I realized that my local camera shop(Hunt's), usually within 10 bucks of online prices, sold me this lens at $575 when B&H has it for $459 PLUS a $60 mail in rebate, so I could have gotten this for $175 cheaper, add $30 for tax that I don't have to pay online, and that's almost $200 cheaper.

I'm debating whether or not I should find a Canon 100mm macro before I buy it, or go with my instinct and make this one my first non-Canon lens.

Gear: 5D Mark II, Carl Zeiss ZE 50mm 1.4, Sigma 20mm f/1.4, Canon 24-105L f/4 IS, Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk1, Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro, Rokinon 35mm f/1.4

You won't see much difference in the two, aside from the construction of the lens itself. The Tamron is a classic, excellent performer. Find that price that makes you feel comfortable and don't look back.

Yeah,,the Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 Macro has been around in one form or another for decades.. It was around as an F/2.5 in Tamron's Adaptall days.. It was a great performer then and is still a great performer..

I just got my lens in the mail today. Took a quick pic of the cat to check sharpness.
this is wide open 2.8 hand held!
I think I got a good one! might be slightly front focusing, but if it is it is slight.
seems really sharp.

I received this lens 2 days ago and made my first macro shots. I'm quite impressed by the quality of it :)

I've been debating between the Tamron and the Canon 100mm. Reviews say quality-wise they're similar, but I hear the focus is slow on the Tamron. Can anyone comment? I like to shoot insects, so obviously focus speed is an issue.

The focus speed is very similar in my opinion, maybe a tad slower.
However, the IQ is almost identical, and the Tamron is slightly lighter, thinner- easier to hold. BUT the Tamron has an extending front thing that stretches out whenever you increase magnification while the Canon doesn't.
