I frequent a Botanical Garden near my home...some say it's my second home...lol.

We're fortunate in that most of the wildlife there are used to human presence...this place gets a lot of visitors during the warmer months. So they tend to remain calm with people milling about.

I found out today that this GBH has been in the area for about 5-6 years...not sure if it's been the same one or not but since I started visiting this place I've always run into the GBH at some point during my visit.

Sunday was magical. I found it near it's favorite pond near the Eagles nest and I set up and watched it rest under a bush then as it started fishing. It worked it's way around the pond catching fish quite frequently. I moved to a near-by Pine tree and sat under it and waited for it to come around a large shrub. Once it got around the shrub it saw me, stopped and stared at me...then started walking towards me.

By the time it was all said and done it was at minimum focus distance from me...about 11 1/2 feet with my 400mm f/5.6L. It fished for about 15 minutes right next to me..it couldn't care less.

I couldn't believe how much this Heron trusted me and it knew I was there. Being this close and having it trust me made my day. :D

Thanks for lookin.

Sounds like an amazing encounter. I also love when wild animals show their trust in you. I've "tamed" several chipmunks and squirrels when I was younger. I was the only one in my family that they would come up to for food. It's so awesome! :)

Thanks Bob, Joe and Mandy for the replies. Hopefully this Heron earned my trust and I can get just as close during the next visit...but I won't push the issue..I was happy with this day and will remember it vividly.

One more before it started fishing...it was watching something in the sky.

Duane,
Nice shooting, I find these birds vary widely in either approachable or not, guess it depends on where there found and human Interaction.

great series, sounds like a special encounter, careful you dont smell like fish, he/ she may close that minimum focus distance in a hurry...:D
