Hm.. a bit of barrel distortion visible at 15 (but that's expected of any zoom).

I guess I may think about picking up this lens in a year or two. Seems like it would be a decent travel lens.

That does not seem right, I got my 12% coupons sent thru my email and it says clearly that its good for camara and camcorder accessories.

I used a copy when I baught my 7D and took another copy back to the store when I picked up the 15-85mm lens a few days later.

The coupons only mention Sony brand camaras as not being included for use.

Best Buy kinda sucks. If I had a local camera store I'd go that way almost all the time.

Weird, very weird, it states on the back that it excluded lenses on mine..

Yes, and it depends

The 17-55 has speed, the 15-85 has range, Personally for walkarounds, i prefer range

If you work mostly indoors, the 17-55 is the better choice, f/2.8 and IS is fantastic inside

If you work mostly outdoors, the 15-85 will be the better choice, the lack of speed is more than compensated for by the range...

I highly doubt that 15-85 will have the same IQ as the 17-55. The price is significantly different too. So by just looking at the price and convinence, i would definitely say that 17-55 have way better IQ.

I'll get a hand onto the 17-55 in a few days, i'll see. But right now, with 17-50 from tamron, which a lot of ppl argue being having compatable IQ, I found out the images are super sharp. So from sole IQ perspective, i would chose 17-55mm. Other wise, for convinence purpose, then you would choose the other one over 17-55mm

Kenji,

Do you have any subjective opinion on the sharpness of this lens compared to the 24-105L? I had pretty much talked myself into the 24-105, but if this lens is similar in IQ I might have to reconsider.

Looking at these pictures (external link) it seems that distortions @15mm will be a bit on the high side (expected at that zoom range), but other than I don't see any obvious optical faults. Still, I'll wait for some detailed reviews but things are looking good so far.

Will this be a great lens? Probably not. Will it be a good one-lens solution for vacations and such? Definitely.

True, and that's exactly why I'm interested in that lens (despite usually shooting with my primes). Best example was at the Frankfurt Auto Show this year - it was almost impossible to compose shots with a prime because most of the time it simplay wasn't possible to take a step forwards or backwards in the crowded exhibition halls.

Distortion is easier to correct than CA, so I'm more worried about the CA. Recent Canon (APS-C) zooms seem to be prone to produce too much CA, which I hate post processing from every photo. Any reports on how much the 15-85 produces CA would be appreciated.

Been a while since i owned the 24-105, But I honestly think the 15-85 is its equal in image quality[Actually im not 100% sure its not a hair sharper in all honesty from looking at my older 24-105 pics..], if you're shooting crop I'd go with the 15-85 over the 24-105 because the range is simply a lot better

I highly doubt that 15-85 will have the same IQ as the 17-55. The price is significantly different too. So by just looking at the price and convinence, i would definitely say that 17-55 have way better IQ.

I owned a 17-55 f/2.8 IS, the 15-85 is in every way its equal optically, and the way you worded that next bit sounds to me like "The 17-55 is more expensive and f/2.8 so it must be better" which is complete bull..

Compared to my 28-75, the 15-85 is just as good, its just as sharp if not sharper at overlapping focal lengths, with the advantage of better build, FAR better AF and IS...

Excellent point, i just went and looked in my pics i took, especially around the lights in the ceiling [at the borders, since this would be the worst-case CA]

What CA there was was removed entirely with a light CA correction in lightroom...so I'd say CA is not a big problem for this lens

Here was the worst CA i could find:

I wonder if the price will drop after the initial rush of orders is filled. I see that most of the larger online sellers like Amazon are still waiting to receive any of these. Hopefully the price will drop a little after a few weeks.
