Mine's on my website here (external link). I also put it on everything. I'm shameless really. Hats, shirts, catchlight cards, brochures, flyers, front plate on my car, etc.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

You guys may want to try this site. I haven't used them personally but have heard really good things.

Please do not use either of these services, they both are Spec work sites.

Basically a bunch of people do work for free and only one gets anything out of it, and it's bad for the design community.

Imagine having 5 photographers, you all have to do a wedding shoot, and the client picks whichever one they want and you get paid nothing if you don't get picked. Would you welcome that type of environment? Designers don't like it either.

then I'd have to ask, why are so many of them there and why are they submitting work? If it's really that bad for them, then they wouldn't be there and/or wouldn't waste their time on it.

Because they aren't designers. At least they don't work in the business, likely don't hold a degree in it. Most would either be students, or those who just do it in their spare time. I do web and graphic design but only on occasion, just not in a professional capacity.

The people there are not really working with you - they are just submitting a ton of logos and stuff and hoping you like one. It's not taking into consideration your business - it's not tailored to your business like a design firm would do. Branding is a big thing, but you're not really getting that type of service with these places. You just get a logo. And while it may look good, it probably won't communicate anything about your business like one from a professional designer who takes a look at your business as a whole and works to design things that fit.

So you're saying no one should hire you for their web or logo design, right? You're doing it just in your spare time like the spec folks.

It worked for tim. And I'm sure it worked for many others. The solo designer I chose for mine was a student at the time. She wasn't an out and out full time professional. You also don't know for sure that these spec designers aren't taking into account your business, just as you can't be sure that a professional doesn't have an ego so big that he designs something you definitely don't want but insists that it's what you need.

Phil Knight also used a student for the Swoosh.

If someone wants to hire me to do web or logo work, that's fine. I do it in my spare time, and make some extra here and there. But it's not on a speculative basis. I get paid for my work or I don't work. Simple as that. Completely different.

Obviously you don't just hire someone by throwing a dart at a phone book. You setup interviews to review portfolios and see if you work well with someone, etc. Then you pick someone, and you can let the huge ego guy have his huge ego but no project to work on.

I'm not saying don't hire someone in school or without a degree or that just does it in spare time. I'm just saying hire someone you like with a portfolio you like instead of a nameless, faceless group of people whom you've never met and have no idea whether they care about the work or just the cash. A designer will get something that you like, that also is tailored to your business, unlike most spec work. Picking something you like out of 200 logos seems like a good idea, but it really isn't. You may like a logo, but there may be problems with it and you could get better service from working with a single designer who understands the way ads and brands and such need to be handled.

Okay, since we're making broad, sweeping, and ultimately unfair generalizations:

I would venture to say it's the spec guys who are doing it because they love it more so than the independent folks. After all, they're designing without guarantee of income while the independent guy won't even get out of bed without being paid.

I'd like you to shoot my wedding. Please show up, no deposit, no guarantee of payment. Would you do that?

I certainly wouldn't.
