They have different data plates and serial numbers.

Surly you can't have two or more planes flying around externally identical with all the same markings and ID numbers, especially if they're heading for the same air show? (bear in mind I'm no aircraft boffin)

The exterior markings (Squadron Codes, etc) mean nothing in terms of air traffic control.

Even if you had two identical paint schemes, in the USA at any rate, one Mustang will be Mustang N12345 while another has to be Mustang N23456 as no two planes can have the same N number.

As Tim said, at the Research and EAA Judging level, they will ultimately have different Serial Numbers as well.

Yep...

What about the MK I's with the Allison? (sniff, sniff...)

In addition to being slow, they had no high altitude performance. The P-51 was mediocre at best until it was mated with the Merlin.
