To each his own, and I'm going to get flamed for this, but ...

Ive had and sold the 100-400 and IMO its not impressive and not worth the $$ . Yes I have seen some fantastic shots with the lens but the quality was not anything near a prime .. If I was just starting again I would go for the 300 f/4 and work towards the 2.8

+1

That is the only Canon L lens I have ever sold and have never regretted getting rid of it. I tried three versions and never had one I thought was even close to the level I wanted.

Attention shoppers, we have lens envy on isle 4. :-)

If you ever get an opportunity to use one you will realize within about 30 seconds that you want to shoot everything you can with that lens. Other than maybe a 300 f/2.8 nothing else even comes close.

Some really sharp/ crisp images you have captured. The 2.8 Tele Primes are amazing goodness :) The reactions are definitely priceless, especially #7.

I'm so jealous. I estimate it to be a year or two before I even get close to getting a 400 2.8 Great shots!

The 1d Mark III is a terrific camera for the lens.

I certainly won't flame... but I gotta say, it's brutal out
there in the youth sports arena. There are parents out
there with 50D's and 100-400's... anything you have
that can differentiate your work to the next level is good
in my book... but yeah a 400 in T-ball is somehat akin
to taking a bazooka to a spitball fight ha ha, do what you
gotta do.
