canon 5D with ebay triggers - sync speed?

anybody here use ebay triggers with a canon 5D? i used the CTR-301P with mine and i find that i can only get 1/160 without a black bar at the bottom. with my old xsi i used to get 1/200 without the black bar. i'm wondering if its just me or if its the norm. thanks

I thought the sync speed of the 5D was 1/200 but maybe its the triggers that you are using that limit you.

i'm thinking the same. with a flash on the body i can get faster than 1/160. but on the trigger thats all i can get. i find that i can't quite kill the ambient light with that speed. even at 1/200 i still pick up some ambient.

I think Canon publishes the EOS DSLRs can sync at 1/125th with anything other than a speedlite. The shutter speed only matters for controlling ambient light, if flash is your main light it's not really an issue.

1/200 gives me a small black bar.

which ebay trigger are you using? i m using the 16 channel one, on a xsi, i can do 1/320 without any problems

ctr-301p. i had no problems when i had a xsi, but on the 5d its slower...bummer...

have you tried using the sync adapter on the side of the 5d to see if you get better results?

I am using one of the variations of the "eBay triggers" - RD-604, to be exact. I can sync at 1/200 with no issues at all. Here's the trigger set: http://item.taobao.com …45a334485c.jhtm​l?cm_cat=0

1/100, ISO100...stop down your aperture more if there's ambient and you dinnae want it

1/160 with the yongnuo RF-602s. I can live with it.

The 5D shutter curtain velocity is just barely able to eak out a 1/200 sync speed. It doesn't have any "sync headroom"--that is, it isn't a bit faster than marked as the other cameras are. If anything introduces any sync lag at all, you will lose a bit of flash coverage on the image at 1/200. If it doesn't look like you're losing any, you're probably not shooting a subject that shows it.

That's probably why the manual advises using 1/125 with anything other than a hotshoe-mounted flash. That's slow enough to be safe for practically anything.

1/160 fine here, 1/200 has a tad of black banding.

The X Sync speed published for a camera is the fastest speed when both curtains are clear of the sensor. This assumes the flash is triggered by the electrical connection at the sync connection.

The remotes convert the electrical signal to a radio fequency signal which then has to be received and converted back to an electrical signal to fire the flash.

This signal conversion takes time. Some devices are faster than others. I recall that PCB says the Cyber sync is about 1/4000 second. Others may be faster or slower.

I find that I can use 1/200 with my Cyber syncs but have to use 1/160 when using Pocket Wizards at a friend's studio. The Quantum triggers another friend has also require 1/160 or less.

My guess is that the eBay trigger, generally, will have greater processing delay than others since speed and cost probably have a correlary.

I am using the Cactus triggers and the best I can get is 1/125!! Bit of a bummer when you are shootin crazy toddlers who wont stay still!! Ok for everything else though!!!
