doesn't quite work for me as I find the rather sharp inner edges of the petals against the out of focus center areas distracting - presume you have done some selective softening or sharpening?

I too am a little distracted by the very sharp edge on the right hand side that doesn't seem to be in keeping with the rest of the depth of field displayed in the image. Other than that, it's a great shot. But I would definitely soften that edge.

No, i ran a high pass filter with hard light over the whole image.
