80% it is enough while 20% you will be glad to have a high MP crop or full frame body. Sometimes if you have enough length high humidity and high temperature forces you to go closer because the air shimmers.

I would love to see Canon make an EF 1200mm f/8L IS lens with 6 or more stops of IS that weighs less than 6kg. But we'd have to wait for a 1D body that can do AF @ f/8 and f/11 AF at the center. Price would be $15-20k?

Taken at a distance of about 20 meters, through a fence. (Chester Zoo)

Absolutely no PP done, except resize and crop.

And the white spot between eye and nose is a catchlight in a tear drop, not a hot pixel.

I just love this lens now that I have got it focusing right. I needed -7 microadjust. The contrast it delivers is wonderful. The IS is outstanding (and absolutely essential at this length, even on a tripod).

Dolina - would you mind sharing the camera settings for your terrific moon shots? Were you using a clock drive on your tripod? This mortal only has a 500mm but would love to learn how to get good shots of the moon nevertheless.

I thought you had to wait for it?

I returned the one my dealer received as a return and ordered a NIB to be delivered in February.

In NY the winter shooting is cold, windy and dark and not the place for an F5.6 lens.

Florida would be nice :)
