Im looking to buy a externiol hard drive and i was looking and found a Seagate BlackArmor 1TB NAS 110 for 60 dollers on black friday. It is normaly a 220 doller hard drive. All im looking for is somthing to have a back up of all my work. I know 1tb is over kill but hey it's 60 dollers and i think its better to have more space then not enough. Now my question is, is that a good exterionl hard drive for what im looking to do?

seagate drives are good, although I prefer ext drives with firewire connection.

Dont buy an external drive. Buy an internal and place it in an external case so you can swap it out if you ever need to. Plus you can buy cases with sata, firewire, and usb ports. Internal drive are usually cheaper, so you spend bout the same by paying difference on the case. (unless u get a expensive case)

I would say go for it, I looked on newegg.com and you can't get a 1tb internal HD for that price plus it is an NAS so if you have a fast enough network that is an option. Besides at that price if the inclosure fails you can just rip the drive out and put it in a different one.

Looks like a decent product, but not made for offsite backup or anything like that. It's just a hard drive with a network interface, plus USB interfaces just in case. I don't see why you wouldn't buy it at that price, so long as it'll do what you need it to.

Remember a NAS device will be slower than a local hard drive, and less portable than a normal external drive. It's really made for sharing between computers.

I switched to an ESATA hard drive dock. That way I can easily swap hard drives and store one offsite. Just need to buy bare drives rather than buying an enclosure every time I want to change my external hard drive capacity. ESATA is certainly faster, also.

That's what I do. The only disadvantage is if there's a fire or water damage to the tower, the drive's caput.

The external Western Digital My Book series is excellent. That's what I use to back up all my data, and keep in a different location in the house.

This item is actually a little different from most external harddrives. Most external HDDs are somewhat "dumb" and need to be connected to a computer (via USB, FireWire, or eSATA) to copy files to/from them. This one is a NAS - which stands for Network Attached Storage. That means instead of connecting it to your computer directly, it can be connected to your home network (e.g. connect it to your cable modem/router) and then you could access it from any of the computers on your network. Depending on your home PC setup, this could be better, worse, or indifferent to what you actually need.

All that said, $60 is a great price for that item. Where did you find it?

Like others, I prefer to buy internal drives separate from external enclosures. I also like to buy only internal drives with 5 year warranties.

I found it at staples on this black friday. The thing is here i am not very computer tec knowlagable so i would not now how to take a interniol and make it externiol. I do all my work on my 500g labtop, what i realy wanted was to clear some room on this with those pics we all have that are not amazing but you see potetiol in them so you dont deleate them so you keep them. I want to store all them on there and just have a back up for all the real good one's.

Other ones i found that where more portable where Western Digital Elements 500GB Portable Hard Drive for 60 also

http://www.pcconnection.com …10116120&SourceID=k232270 (external link)

Also found a Seagate External Portable Drive - hard drive - 320 GB - Hi-Speed USB for 60. This one seems the most portable (which i dont mind for when i go to class or to a freinds house and might need to bring it) Now what one do you think is the best one for what im looking for? Just as back up for EVERYthing, might take it out and most of all i want easy to use and fast.

I was looking at the "show me your office" thread here. It's so funny to see from four, five years back people bragging with 256mb of ram and 5gb hard drives.

I remember always diving to the back page of PC Magazine to Dell's ad. Every time another processor came out, or more ram or larger hard drive, the top of the line tower was always either 2,999 or 3,999. What a difference a few short years makes.

As to this topic, I use a variety of hard drives but think G Drives are the best. I have a 1tb G Drive safe from B&H, along with two WD My Books, a Lacie, a few different Passport hds.

Here's a question: After you eject a hard drive from a Mac, how can you remount it without turning it off and back on?
