I have this 4 years old Acer 15.2" laptop, 512MB PC2700 ram, AMD 1800Mhz CPU, 80GB HD. Is it worth upgrading the memory to 2GB which costs about $100,

or should I just spend $600 and get a new laptop, Lenovo G550, 3GB ram, T4300 2.1GHz, and 250GB HD, 15.6" LCD ?

ps. it's mainly for photo editing.

upgrading to 2gb will help you run things, but won't help much in editing since that amd processor really sucks. If you want cheap, look no further than black friday/cyber monday. some computers with better specs are being sold for $500 or less.

And go asus, toshiba, or dell, they are better than lenovo

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Computer prices are so low! I'd buy a new one.

They make the thinkpad now, the quality thinkpads were designed and produced by IBM. IBM no longer designs lenovo's thinkpads, so you're left with a good brand name but lowering quality standards.

Didn't Lenovo build the IBM thinkpad line before the taken over ? What is the lowering quality standards from lenovo based on ?

I did a search on "quality lenovo", most people praise the T and X series, and those who have problems with lenovo are mostly with customer services and the keyboards, but the Acer I am using now already have a few keys fell out.

IBM used to design the old lenovos after lenovo bought out the laptop section... And while they may praise the laptops, it's for innovation and features, not reliability. Comparing them to acer (second worst after HP in terms of reliability) isn't saying much though.

'Breaking points' (do I upgrade or buy new?) are never easy, but I think this one is easier. The *only* reason I'd even consider buying that RAM upgrade for $100 is (a) if I couldn't afford any more right now and (b) I thought the computer could somehow last another year.

But....considering that you have a 4 year old Acer computer -- not exactly the BMW of computer manufacturers -- chances are you already are working on borrowed time. Assuming of course that your warranty has long since expired, sinking even $100 into a system like that is basically a roll of the dice. Sorry to sound like worst-case scenario guy, but it's not unthinkable that the thing could croak next week or next month....in which case you'd be out $100 on RAM that is completely obsolete now. [Maybe you could recover 1/3 of the value via Ebay....I dunno]

Bottom line -- if you can afford to spend $500 on a new laptop, I'd do it in a heart beat, especially with the screaming deals that should be just around the corner here!

Ditto what BeritOlam said, no point sinking money into a badly out dated computer that is at the end of its life cycle.
