Also you can trade in a broken film SLR for an XS kit. With tax and shipping it comes out to a tad under $400. I had a busted Rebel G that I used for the program.

My nephew bought a brand new Xs w/ 18-55IS from Fry's for $450+ tax about 7 weeks ago. Look for Fry's ad in the coming week. Fry's might run it again.

One other difference is shutter count. And used 50D might have 10-20k instead of 1-2k on a refurbed.

I can't see there being that many shutters on it. My "refurb" came looking factory new, and if anyone put more than a few hundred shots, they mustve done so in a clean room because there isnt a nick, scuff, or scratch anywhere on the body, nor were there any on the lens mount. It even had the clear plastic over the screen! My guess is my 50D came from a store model perhaps, or maybe its just a brand new one they got mixed up with a refurbed one!

Doing time lapses could eat up a lot of frames without you even touching the camera...

How many people of all 50D users do time-lapse? And would then return the camera? Odds are in my favor I would think.

Easy to check for 50D. Just download EOSInfo and find out. If you have not reset your shutter count since purchase, just subtract the file # from the EOSinfo shutter count. That would be the the refurb's shutter count when it arrives.

EOSInfo already reports current the shutter count, so no need to subtract anything. AFAIK, there is no software to reset shutter count on the 50D that's available publicly.

I helped a friend purchase a refurb 50D, and the shutter count reported by EOSInfo was 27. Not sure if that was from its previous life, or Canon's testing.

Yes, EOSInfo already reports the shutter count. But if the owner has taken # pictures after receiving the refurbished camera, then said new owner must subtract his/her own shutter actuations to find out the shutter count when it arrived. Hence the suggestion to subtract the file number from the last taken image - sometihng that obviously doesn't work if said new owner has reset the file number count.

It is very easy to determine if this is a good deal for you.

You can find lightly used to almost new 50Ds here on the boards for around $850 usd, and using this current (Nov 09) number as the baseline,

Good deal if Xcurr - 20 - Yval > 629, where Xcurr is current used lightly owned average price of the 50D and Yval is the value of your trade

If your camera is worth less than $200 usd (remember you have shipping costs), broken or completely working, then this is probably a good deal for you. If you can find a 300D on the boards or ebay for $150, this is a good deal for you, a bit of a hassle, but still a good deal.

Just take off the battery door or bend a pin to report it broken! There are pins you can bend that cause no issues to the camera btw. :)

Nice! I just bought a broken XTI for $100. So I'll be using that to trade in for the 50D...

I guess I am not so lucky. I traded in my XTi for a 50D about a month ago.
Compare to the refurbed XTi I got 2 years ago, this one definitely looks more "pre-owned".
Though only 2 very light scratches on top LCD and on the tripod mount, the shutter count is already at 8k.
One thing that pisses me off the most is the battery. I wonder if the previous owner switched it with an older battery because it only holds about 170~200 shots. :(

Does the camera you trade in have to be broken? I have a 20D refurb that has treated me great over the years, but for $630 i might consider upgrading. There is nothing wrong with the 20D though. Am i still elegible?
