So, after starting out with a Rebel XS I made the jump to a 50D (sold the 1000D to a friend)- I had caught the "professional" bug. I was SURE I was going to go pro...lol. Well, that didn't happen and the husband and I needed some cash to pay off some old debt so we can get a house - so I sold my 50D, 60mm macro, my 70-200 f/4L =( and my 580EX II. Looking back, it was definitely a hasty mistake to spend so much money in a short time - but I'm an impulse buyer and when I get into a hobby I thrust myself in full force.

Well, I just sold the 50D and with my Christmas bonus, now that the debts are paid, I decided to get another rebel and buy some reasonable lenses. So, my T1i arrived today with my nifty fifty, and I'm quite pleased. I have a 55-250 coming in the mail, and those will be my lenses until my next bonus (or birthday)! I did buy a battery grip (aftermarket) because the T1i feels very small in my hands compared to how my 50D felt (and I have small hands!!).

I have to remember that going pro isn't going to happen for everybody and this is a hobby - a wonderful hobby, but not one I can spend thousands of dollars on!

Anyone else ever jumped in too quickly and had to downgrade or am I the only idiot who cartwheels in full force and then needs to take a step back? lol.

Anyway, here are a few simple shots taken with the nifty and the T1i. Can't wait to try out the video!

ISO 1600 (wanted to try out the high ISO), 1/30, 2.8, 50mm (obv)

1600, 1/200, 1.8

800, 1/20 (obv handheld, lol), 2.5

I'm glad I have another DSLR. Now I just need to downgrade my sig...lol.

you should have let me know about that 60 MM macro..

I have a T1i and all the same stuff, aftermarket grip, nifty 50, T1i. good combo and doesn't break the bank.

You don't have to have a boat anchor camera to take great pics!

some make the right "Rebel" choice in the beginning, some later but with the 55-250 and 500D you will get great pics!

I don't think there's a right or wrong way to approach your hobby. At least you had to guts to admit you weren't in a position to spend that kind of money. Besides, owning a (semi)pro body doesn't make you a pro photographer. How many on this board own a 5D (like myself) and are just hobbyists? I just bought my first L lens off this guy - he owned decent gear, but was selling everything and was 'downgrading' to G10/G11 instead. It somehow got me thinking: I might make that move too someday...

Yea, I definitely learned that it doesn't make you a pro! And to be totally honest, my skillset wasn't at a point that the 50D actually made a noticeable difference to me over my XS, especially since I do mostly outdoor shooting and not a lot of low light. The 70-200 f4L I for sure noticed a difference over my first 70-300 Tammy - but not so much the body.

I'm just thankful that I have a VERY understanding husband, although I think he had a bit of an "i told you so" moment when I decided that I didn't need the 50D anymore!

I'm really glad that I have another camera and I have a feeling the T1i will suit me just fine for what I want to do with it. I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon!

Moderation is key - I need to learn how to control myself better.

I am sooo mad at myself - I ordered the T1i and nifty from amazon on Sunday night - a DAY after the promotion from amazon for 200$ off the T1i + 18-55mm + 55-250mm. GRRRRR. If only I had known!

I ended up buying a refurb 55-250 from adorama. Doh!

I would rather have the 70-300. only problem is that color is not great, focus is so-so, and no IS w/ 300 MM = problems.

How do you like the T1i compared to your xs?

Just because you're not going "pro" (yet), doesn't mean you can't work towards it. ;)

The T1i is a very capable tool. Yes, you might get some people out there that will look down at you for your gear. But they're ignorant and insecure. It's about people skills, it's about talent, it's about hard work, and ultimately, it's about what your final image output. And the T1i is more than capable.

I feel like I buy way too much on an impulse as well... I am trying to control it a bit better, but these forums make it WAY too hard... I read all these awesome reviews of lenses and equipment and I want it all.

In the past week, I bought another TC, Top of the line B+W CPL Filter, and noise removal software...

But at the same time, it is stuff I kind of need... I think? :D

I won't even bring up all the lenses I am so close to buying... That I really don't have money for right now...

I just got to control myself! I can do it!

hehe

I have made some impulse buys like the 5d2 but I got it for a really good price but I just didn't like it that much after using it awhile. I downgraded to an Xsi and I love it. I use it everyday unlike the 40d and 5d2 I had. I still have my L lens though and it stays on my rebel~miss my 40d sometimes~it was a sweet camera.

I did the same sort of thing a few years back as well. Thought I'd make some money selling a few photos, no real plan of any sort, bought a 20D, 70-200 2.8, and a 100-400 and some other odds and ends that ended up being a real expensive hobby for a while til I needed to buy a house and couldn't afford both. Getting back into it again now, shooting some weddings and doing some product/portfolio shooting now to make what I have now at least work on paying for itself. :) As long as you love what you do and get enjoyment from it, it's worthwhile in the end.

Just a guy with a few photography goodies that challenge me anew every day! ;)

Thanks for the support everyone and for sharing your stories lol.

Is it ridiculous to try to do some paid shoots and show up with a T1i? :X The few shoots I did with the 50D were mostly equine photography and I honestly don't think many people would know the difference... I'm just self conscious, I suppose!

And yes, it's VERY hard to have this hobby without breaking the bank - lol.

Frankly, I've had several people "Oh and Ah" over my Rebel XT. So unless someone is there that is also "into" photography, most folks couldn't spot the difference between a Rebel and a 1 series.
