Hope this doesn't sound too noobish... or trollish... Apologies if repetitive. A little background; I started my digital quest with Canon on the 20D upon it's release at full price. As I progressed so did my cameras, the 30D, 40D etc... As I found my niche in the photography world I sat down one day and decided what was and was not important in my gear. High ISO not a requirement, high frame rate was nice but also not a necessity, but what I absolutely required was deadly accurate and quick AF in low light studio situations. So of course I traded it all for a 1D MKIII... and quickly found out that I had a recall unit, a bad one. I had previous frustrations with the lesser bodies with err99's etc... and decided at that point with the newest frustration on a $3K body that Canon wasn't for me and I returned the MKIII and bought a used D2x rig and I haven't looked back.

I recently mentored a fellow photographer with studio lighting through a few shoots and some processing and was rewarded with a 1D MKII for my efforts. It went to Craigslist almost immediately but while searching the web for a good price point, I stumbled into here and a couple of other sites and found the loyalty of the 1D MKII owners almost rabid. I am not a fanboy, IMO the camera is a tool like a hammer, whether it's a Craftsman or a Stanley, I dont care, as long as it hammers the nail and the head doesn't fly off the handle, which I felt happened on the Canons too often.

As I said, I know the 1 series sensation so there was no surprise there, I haven' shot with it, (no lens), so I don't know what I am missing if anything. My question to you is this. Do I owe it to myself to purchase an L to find out what the loyalty is about or will I be disapointed after having seen some spectacular MKIII shots and of course what my present gear gives me now.

It is a SPORT camera. With modeling lamps I would find it hard for any camera to not lock focus? If you buy a lens get the 24-70 F2.8, works great on the 1D!

Why don't you just borrow or rent a L lens for a weekend and see whether you like it ?
Like you point out, it's just a tool. While I have never owned a Nikon, I have shot a few times with various models....most of my digital experience has been with Canon. Honestly, I'm sure I could get photos with either, and if printed and laid down on a table, probably would not be able to tell which came from where.
If you're gonna sell the Mk2....if it's a beat up bargain, I'm interested if the price is right.

I would say borrow a friends lens or rent one (L-series if possible as said above) and give it a try and see if you like it. It's a great body and I flat out love mine.

Even with a modeling lamp, a single light with 20 or 30deg grid played havoc with 20D and 30D... 40D was a little better but nothing like the pro bodies of either maker.

Was there a recall for the MKII? If so, what's the affected serial number range?

As far as I know there isn't any recall on the 1D Mk II or the 1D Mk II N. There was a recall for the 1D Mk III because of AF issues.
