How to check your camera/lens?

All,
I found a "possible" local deal for brand new 50D and 28-135mm lens, called it possible because up to this moment I don't know if it is really what the seller described. How do you check if they are working properly like brand new other than physical appearance? Of course I will take some pics with it, but as far as shutter counts, internal function/features etc. Is there any information that you can gather from the serial# on the bottom of body? TIA...cheers

thanks tommi...i guess i have to bring my laptop when i meet the seller and look at the camera to find out the shutter count.
